World’s Greatest Drag Race Returns With 12 Cars And Over 6,000 HP

The time has come for this year’s Greatest Drag Race from Motor Trend, and as usual it includes 2018’s hottest metal, a dozen cheerful drivers and a really long runway.

MT returned to the Vandenberg Air Force Base in order to put their three-mile-long runway into good use. And by good use we mean a pretty crazy quarter-mile drag race.

This year’s contenders are the McLaren 720S, Porsche 911 GT2 RS, Dodge Challenger RT Scat Pack 1320, Honda Civic Type R, Lamborghini Huracán Performante, BMW M5, Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack Level 2, Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, Kia Stinger GT, Audi TT RS, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and the Aston Martin Vantage. A Mazda MX-5 Club was also present, but it didn’t participate for rather obvious reasons.

Just by looking the list with the contenders, it’s pretty obvious that first place will be decided between the McLaren, the Porsche and the Lamborghini – with the Corvette ZR1 lurking in the background.

This year’s race also includes an SUV in the face of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, which -Mild Spoiler Alert!- did a pretty impressive job against its opponents. The BMW M5 also requires attention, thanks to its trick all-wheel drive system and 600 horsepower.

Which one is the winner of the World’s Greatest Drag Race this year? Let’s find out, shall we?

  • Bo Hanan

The winner is the M5, hauling her 4500lb ass down the ramp next to the ZR1.

    • ace_9

Why not 6500lb ? If you are just imagining some numbers, then why not more?

      • 101st ABN

I think ‘more’ would be a proper choice.

        • ace_9

          I don’t understand.

      • Mike anonymous

6000hp, would be an average of 500hp per car if there are 12. But I know some of these cars have 700+ hp, which would in turn mean that at least a few of the vehicles within this line-up are considerably underpowered (when compared to the supercars and others they are up against,.. it’s just the all look like exotic supercars.)

One or more of these vehicle is seriously underpowered if there is a total around 6,000hp (as I previously) explained.

        • ace_9

We were talking about weight in pounds (lbs), not horsepower (hp) 🙂 But, I agree, that normal people would use kilograms. I’m used to metric units, but I learned there is no point in using metric system with americans… Anyway, I was just suggesting, that BMW M5 does not weigh 4500 lbs like Bo Hanan was suggesting. Because in Europe M5 weighs 1855 kg (4090 lbs), so 4500 lbs was way too much. I forgot, however, that americans often have heavier cars because they need leather and chrome on everything on expensive cars, they also demand sunroofs, industrial grade climate control, ton of big cupholders and naturally, big soft electrically adjusted chairs to support their healthy body frames.

          • tbonesteak33

I am an American and I am fluent in all things metric. Your assumption about our illiteracy of the metric system shows that you are guilty of the same willful ignorance you accuse us to be. Why don’t you learn the imperial system and become better read ? Oh wait, you’re just some worthless euro-hick. Go home, troll.

      • Bo Hanan

        2018 BMW M5
        MSRP: From $102,600
        Horsepower: 600 hp
        Engine: 4.4 L V8
        Curb weight: 4,370 lbs
        MPG: 15 city / 21 highway
        Torque: 553 lb-ft

        ace_9, you stupid bitch! 🙂

        • ace_9

I see that you like to escalate things 🙂 Yes, 4370 lbs (not 4500 lbs) is the weight for american market. European version has 1855 kg (4090 lbps). So, yeah, I must apologize, because I forgot about special needs of U.S. citizens… Bigger seats, additional cupholders… probably also a lot more warning labels and much bigger user manual explaining for example that cruise control is not an autopilot, or nice big illustrations to indicate which pedal makes the car go faster and which one slows it down…

          • Bo Hanan

So you’re trying to talk shit in english and you don’t even speak it well. You’re pathetic- on a good day…

          • ace_9

I would never claim that my english is flawless… But I doubt you would understand my native language 😀

          • Bo Hanan

            ???

          • tbonesteak33

Ah yes another anti-american asshat! Crawl back into the hole you came from you pest.

          • ace_9

Your fellow american friend insulted me several times using different words immediately when I suggested that M5 does not weigh 4500 lbs. I did not want to insult him in a same low-level way as he did, so I just wrote what I wrote. He then edited all of his comments and removed most of the insults.

  • TheToadPrince..~~ToadSquad

instead of a widebody hellcat they choose the skatpak….smh…but at least it beat the stage 1 5.0 mustang.

    • john1168

The Mustang was a PP2. Which is pretty impressive for the Challenger

  • MPAMPIS

    Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio !!!!!!!
