Cars don’t get much cuter than the current Volkswagen e-Up! Not only does the tiny city car have a front fascia that’s just begging to be squished like the cheeks of a baby, but it has an exclamation mark in its name for god’s sake.
Unfortunately, cuteness alone isn’t enough alone to sell a vehicle and since the current e-Up! hit European dealerships in 2016, it hasn’t been a raging success. In an effort to help combat this, the automaker has slashed pricing for the all-electric runaround.
As noted by Inside EVs, the VW e-Up! is now priced from 22,975 euros ($26,192) in Germany, a significant 3925 euro ($4474) less than the starting price which Volkswagen once demanded for the model. While that’s a significant saving, the all-electric e-Up! remains significantly more pricey than ICE-powered variants of the city car which start at roughly 10,000 euros ($11,400).
For their money, e-Up! Buyers gets an electric motor delivering 82 hp, 210 Nm of torque, and connected to an 18.7 kWh battery. Under NEDC conditions, the car has a range of roughly 100 miles (160 km). That’s not a lot in today’s world of ever-improving electric vehicles but would be adequate for those buyers that live in cities with short commutes.
While the e-Up! is still quite costly, not all hope is lost for the vehicle.
According to reports, a new-generation e-Up! will be launched next year alongside a revised Seat e-Mii and Skoda e-Citigo. Not only will the range of this new model swell, potentially up to 270 km (168 miles), but pricing could fall below the 20,000 euro ($22,800) mark.
