Bet You’ve Never Heard A Toyota Prius Sound As Good As This GT300 V8 Racer

Unless you’re a Toyota fanatic or closely follow Japanese racing series’, you may not know that the Toyota Prius has competed in the nation’s GT300 championship for a number of years.

Now before you scroll to the comments section with a number of confused questions, we’ll get the most important things out of the way straight away. Yes, the Prius filmed during recent shakedown tests is indeed the facelifted model unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Yes, it is actually a Prius. No, it barely shares anything in common with the road-going model you can walk into your local dealership and buy.

Rather than equipping the race car with a boring hybrid powertrain like the production model, the Toyota Prius GT300 racer has a thumping V8 under its skin. What’s more, this engine is mounted in the middle of the vehicle and in order to comply with GT300 regulations, has its power capped at 300 hp.

For a V8, that’s not a lot of grunt. However, it is a healthy boost over the 120-odd horsepower offered up by regular Prius models.

The Prius prototype in question was filmed bathed in camouflage and being taken to its limits by a very committed driver.

Much like current NASCAR vehicles, it would be nearly impossible to recognize this racer as a Prius if it wasn’t for the headlights and taillights. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, however, as the Prius name doesn’t exactly conjure up images of a potent race car designed to win races and championships.

  • Mr. EP9

Honestly, they didn’t need a V8 to get 300hp to meet regulations but I’m assuming reliability was a huge factor in the decision.

    • RDS Alphard

It is regulation because it still build on JAF GT300 regulation, I believe Mother Chassis one also limited at 300hp, only FIA GT3 one have higher horsepower than 300hp.

  • Jason Miller

GT300 is mostly filled with GT3 spec machines these days and the power limit is no longer 300hp.

  • Six_Tymes

And just as ugly as a regular model.

  • benT

it’s about as much Prius as Camry NASCAR is Camry sedan for church on sundays.

    • RDS Alphard

As I recall, Prius GT still use actual Prius sheet metal, as shown in non disguised part on the car; part of the headlights & taillights are actual Prius too… so in a way it’s way more Prius than Camry NASCAR is Camry.

  • Bash

    It’s V8 baby. Now someone do a Tesla V12.

  • ace_9

Sounds and looks very aggressive and Toyota needs more of these sporty models. Can’t wait for the official reveal. This will sell like hotcakes.

(This comment is a parody to the comments in the article about Corvette C8R).

Anyone know the displacement of the engine?

The way it looks don’t know if I should laugh or cry, but at least it’s different.
