Bold Claim: 2019 Mercedes G-Class Is Better Than The Range Rover

If you’re either an off-roading enthusiast, a classic car aficionado or perhaps both, then odds are the Mercedes G-Class holds a very special place in your heart.

To this day, it remains one of the most iconic automobiles ever built and Mercedes have had no problem selling them across the globe despite the fact that they were never among the most comfortable or technologically-advanced SUVs around, especially in the luxury sector.

After all, that’s what the G-Wagen is, a luxury SUV, although you sometimes wouldn’t know it just by looking at it, or while touching certain interior areas that weren’t as plush as you may have liked. However, with the all-new model, all those issues seem to have been resolved.

A clean slate

It may not look like it from afar, but Mercedes really went to town in redesigning the 2019 G-Class and turning it into something that can finally live up to its price tag, offering more than just image value. According to Doug DeMuro, the new model is everything its predecessor should have been and then some.

Build quality, comfort, ride quality, refinement, performance – all those categories have been addressed and now the G is among the world’s best all-round luxury SUVs. In fact, DeMuro went as far as to say that the new G-Wagen is better than the Range Rover, which is almost a shocking statement considering that it was only last year when the former couldn’t even hope to contend with the latter when it came to comfort, on-board tech, quality and pretty much everything else we look for in a luxury product.

Classic parking brake is the best!

  • Bash

    Said who?

    • D4VE THEFIRST

      Doug. Doug DeMoron.

      • Bash

        You don’t say! 😉

      • Momogg

        😂😂😂

    • ace_9

Why not? Mercedes is (probably) more reliable, it is quicker and is accepted as a status symbol. There is not much that’s objectively better on Range Rover side…

  • jrelon

    The wheels are too small.

    • brn

The wheels are too big. The tires are too small.

      • jrelon

        More accurate. Yes.

  • Jds65

The range is sexy af but it’s absolutely horrendous when it comes to reliability.

  • Mr. EP9

I watched one of his videos once and that was all I can stomach. Never again.

    • EM1

Too many videos from the same person

    • Mynameis Taylor

i’ve never been able to watch any video of Doug’s to completion. Like you, i cannot stomach. I can’t think of the last time even clicked one of his videos.

  • ksegg

I’m sorry do I live in another dimension.

The G-Wagen has ALWAYS been better than a Range Rover.

Anything the British touches turns into unreliable dust. You’d have to be insane to buy a Range Rover.

    • Momogg

Maybe the first Range Rover classic with the VM Turbo Diesel. And that’s all.

    • Ali

No true at all .. MB has its own problems .. The more complex the car is the more issue it throw at you.

      • Merc1

They don’t have anywhere near the problems of Land Rover products.

        M

    • PK

i would trust german cars more than british!

      • ksegg

Typically I would agree with this statement, but the GWagen is an exception, when compared directly with the Range Rover.

        • PK

more like the defender which the new design is coming soon. the range rover is mercedes benz gls competitor is it not?

    • The Bombki

I guessing you’ve never owned one.

  • MPAMPIS

    who is he ?

    • ace_9

Self-employed, but acclaimed car reviewer on youtube that focuses on details that other reviews are missing. His reviews are unbiased, thorough, very consistent, entertaining and he devised a scoring system for all cars regardless of their category and it is possible to compare them using this system. Some people, however, don’t like him, because he sounds a little bit dummy (many times on purpose, he is quite clever actually) or they don’t like his way of rating cars (which is strange to me, since the rating system is very good).

      • Mynameis Taylor

i agree. While I find him annoying, Doug has many followers for a reason. In fact, I think the he’s annoying on purpose.

      • brn

I’ve found Doug to be entertaining, but he’s spent so much time around extremely expensive vehicles that he’s become a snob.

    • ErnieB

I think he does a good job albeit a bit on the dorky side of things .. he is passionate about cars.. which is cool with me!

    • EM1

      annoying dork

  • ace_9

Lexus could be also a good choice. Unless, the grille is an issue of course 🙂

    • Merc1

If Lexus would redesign the LX570 into something modern and stylish they’d take a big chunk of the RR pie.

      M

      • Mr. EP9

Bring the Supercharged version over here to the states while they are at it.

  • Momogg

In G63 version why not? 😍

  • EM1

why cant this webpage use more than one channel/reviewer to display car reviews?

    • Matt

It can, it also posts reviews from CarWow and Autocar – among others.

  • Six_Tymes

personally, I have grown tired of the expensive box with it’s triple side square 1970’s looking side windows. I would never buy one, even if i could afford to.

    • Merc1

      Problem solved.

      M

  • Mynameis Taylor

The new Velar already has tech problems

  • Ali

Obviously, he didn’t drive both for an extended time .. no chance for a body on frame with a solid axle in the back to compete with a unibody platform as the Range Rover. Having driven both the New Range Rover and the old G, the difference is so huge that the new G with it’s boxy shape and rear axle can never bridge. Drive both at 60mph-70mph and you will immediately come to know the difference.

    • Merc1

It’s clear you haven’t driven the new G.

      M

      • Abu Sayyaff

What was done to the G vs the old G is nothing more that what Toyota did to the Land Cruiser back in 1998 by fitting it with IFS … now am not comparing the two…. but you can’t beat all the other reviews on the new G that still complained from it’s bouncy feel (a classic behavior of BOF). The new G can never be better than RR in handling, comfort and areo…

      • Ali

The new G is still body on frame with a huge solid axle hanging in it’s back .. you can’t defeat “engineering for purpose” .. no luxury car uses solid axles anymore, yes they do use leather :()

    • MarketAndChurch

It’s not much different than driving a Wrangler. The Range Rover handles more like a car though.

  • TheAmerican

It ain’t gonna break down so yeah, it’s better than a range rover.

  • brn

Lincoln? Or is she too much of a brand snob?

  • FunctionForm

The Mercedes isn’t even close. Let’s see what the new GLS brings us.

  • Merc1

Doug doesn’t fully get it yet, but it’s a much better review this time. He is right about Land Rover’s Defender too. Can’t wait to see that one.

    M

  • Momogg

    😂

    Exactly!

  • محمد علي

For my all respect to other people opinions, Range Rover is the worst automaker I’ve ever seen. Drove a Sport HSE 2013 before and it was nothing comparing to rivals such as Infiniti QX and Land Cruiser. I mean, sure it has all the options that driver needs on that simple white dashboard but many people don’t like that style. RR should change itsi basics and make more cool models, and ofc let’s better not talk about the Engines cuz Mercedes-Benz is the best or nothing (in my opinion) so comparing a G-Class to Range Rover is a shame.
