An All-Electric Mercedes-Benz SL Might Just Save Its Future

As Mercedes moves towards having a electrified version of each model in its lineup, it goes without saying that their performance-oriented models will also sport hybrid or all-electric variants.

This rendering of an an electric SL, labelled the EQSL, was thought up by Peisert Design, the creator of a Rolls-Royce Cullinan drawing, from November of last year. Of course, the Rolls was based on multiple spy images that were already available at that time, whereas this electrified SL is just a styling exercise.

At the same time, Mercedes has already announced the next-gen SL will go down a different path than the current roadster, so it very well transform into a driver-oriented coupe.

This renderfeatures multiple SL design elements, such as the grille, bonnet and overall silhouette. The headlight design however is pretty original, with hook-like DRL graphics and lighting units embedded deep inside the front fenders. It’s both flashy and futuristic at the same time.

While there’s no word on when we might see a new-age electric sports car by Merc in real life, this shouldn’t be that long given its commitment to electrification.

Electric doesn’t save anything, it’s just the precursor to total death of the automobile.

    • TheBelltower

That makes no sense. Do you think people are going to start traveling via Start Trek transporter anytime soon?

  • TheBelltower

Looks like it’s designed to fit a conventional engine. There’s no need for such a huge front end on an EV.

    • Astonman

It’s a styling execsise. You should take a look at an AMG GTS with the hood open. There’s no need to have that much extra room but it sure gives the car presence with that long hood.

      • TheBelltower

Totally agree. Though as EV’s become more and more common, design assumptions based on proportions of conventional engines are going to start looking very dated. With no engine under the hood, it seems inauthentic.

        • Astonman

Good point. I can see it changing with the newer generation of car enthusiasts. However myself, I would love the extra space for gear. I can imagine truly fitting a set or two of golf clubs.

  • Adilos Nave

That’s a rendering? Wow, super impressive work. Check out the distorted reflections on the hood. I had to do a double-take on that one. I don’t care much for the styling but the workmanship shown here is stellar.

  • INTERESTING. THE HEADLIGHT TREATMENT SAYS CADILLAC TO ME.

  • ErnieB

I don’t mind the whole EV movement .. just don’t touch sports cars..

    • MultiKdizzle

Do you want sports cars to disappear completely?

That would be how you get it.

    • bxniels0

I agree. If the electric engine is to help with the torque curve, then fine. But if the car has no progressive power, aural engine note or personality etc…, what’s the point.

      • Dude

The Bolt is pretty fun to drive and I’ve heard that the Model 3 is a joy to toss around corners. “don’t touch sports cars” is the same kind of backwards car bro thinking that you see in the Jalopnik forums next to the turbo trash talk and the demands for a manual wagon that no one will buy.

        • ErnieB

It’s okay if you like your sports car silent, but I think a proper sports car should have some real sounds coming out of the exhaust.. to me a sports car is a combination of speed, driving dynamics, and sound.. all combined to give you that exhilarating experience.. plus a good exhaust note turns heads which is partially why you buy one.. again, I am all for innovation in EV technology. Hybrid engines are awesome .. pair a V6 with an electric engine and tune the sound and you get the best of both worlds..

    • Merc1

      I agree completely.

  • Subi-Rubicon1

It looks like a botched job gone very wrong.

  • bxniels0

Electric? So it’s going to be an S Class, not an SL Class

  • StrangerGP

Why does an electric car has to look so much different (and in most cases very ugly)? Just give it the same styling and modify only the grille and the back fender to remove the exhausts.

    • Bash

That one up there looks pretty normal to me. I would get me a different set of rims tbh but it’s fine!
