Should Someone Put This BMW 3-Series Out Of Its Misery?

It might be just a stereotype propagated for quite some time, yet BMW drivers tend to get a bad rep, but there are also plenty good ones out there, some of which who tend to hold the E36 3-Series in very high regard.

It may not have been the first ever 3-Series, but the the E36 pretty much led to the rise of the nameplate on a global level, becoming the first 3er to be sold as a saloon, coupe, convertible and touring (station wagon).

The novelties don’t stop there. The E36 was also the first 3-Series to be offered with a hatchback body style (in the Compact) and the first to get a 6-speed manual transmission, a 5-speed automatic and a four-cylinder diesel unit. Many BMW purists still consider it the quintessential 3er and in many ways, it really was.

Although it’s not unusual for older cars to carry on without their owners caring too much, or simply taken to the scrapyard, this one had us baffled. Why would anyone do this to a 3-Series? In theory, you could describe it as having been fitted with a wide-body kit, custom hood, new spoiler, dual tone wheels and large rear wing.

The truth is that this… thing is absolutely horrid – and that may very well be the understatement of the century. No need to elaborate too much; just look at it! Have you ever seen a worse E36?

As for where we found the image, it was found by a Reddit user that goes by the name Cosmic_Sweater who spotted it near Atlanta, Georgia.

this is so bad, that cant help but wonder what the owner looks like.

    • kachuks

Zoom in, hesh behind the wheel.

  • Wandering_Spirit

I believe it is an unfinished work taken around for testing or for need while being completed. The total lack of taste remains. The front hood being the worst part.

  • NOT ONLY DID HE FAIL SHOP CLASS HE WAS TOLD TO LEAVE BEFORE THE TERM WAS UP.

        Just back.

  • Bash

Thought it’s some sort of snow but I realized this is just ugly. Might be an unfinished work as some was saying.

  • brn

Let’s not pretend that an out-of-warranty 3-series is all that special.

    • Da Only Skid

Let’s not pretend and are unless it’s a CSL.

I’ve got a 1998 E36 5-speed I’ll still own on the day I die. All my friends and family know how attached I am to it and they even call it by the name I gave it. “The Silver Bullet.” Or “The Bullet” for short. Wonderful cars. Especially the 318i.

let me drastically reduce my FOV by putting this fake sh*t on my bonnet….

  • jrelon

That’s that new Liberty Walk shit!

All joking aside, yes, kill it with fire. And possibly the driver too, to make sure they don’t do it again to another car.

  • Paul

It’s a work in progress that never should have started.

  • kirbang

Atlanta E36 owners gravitate heavily towards the boy-racer look. Buy a rat, wrench it into running, trash it, complain about reliability. I see few nice clean e36s about, although I own one.

  • The Rocket

Looks like a guy in the middle of building “his” car to me…I think it’s disrespectful to blast his ride like this and everyone trash talk someone’s creativity. You can tell who the real car guys on here are and who just like to talk shit. Show some creativity, you’ll never know something until you try and try and try…you think chip foose was always a car prodigy? We all have to start somewhere. Though his car isn’t my style…I still respect the effort.

    • TB

True…and this pic could be the ride is on it’s way to the body/paint shop to get that resolved. I hope so anyways.

      • Da Only Skid

Like you said, I hope so. Very good point made. Additionally, when modifying a vehicle a lot of times people don’t have all the money so it comes about in steps. For instance putting a $7k lift on a vehicle (just random) and still rolling on stock wheels because the other $2k is not in the bank.

        • TB

I think it’s safe to say a lot of us have been there…Lord knows I drove around with resin on my car for months before I could get it into the body shop.

  • Blade t

    Beautiful. .

  • TB

    Kill it…kill it with fire…!!!

  • Da Only Skid

Didn’t even need to see the last line…Atlanta, GA. Upon first sight knew it was a southern wreck, well the Krystal’s sign helped also. Looks like a mash of a Bimmer and some sort of Lexus body kit. Being from the south I would like to apologize to both companies.

“the E36 pretty much led to the rise of the nameplate on a global level, becoming the first 3er to be sold as a saloon, coupe, convertible and touring (station wagon).”

Inaccurate and misleading at the least. That honor goes to the venerable E30 that was the first 3 series to come in coupe, sedan, convertible AND touring. While the E36 sold in higher numbers, the E30 is the vehicle that truly led to BMW’s rise. This is a matter of fact, not of opinion. It seems that as younger auto enthusiasts come of age, they always attempt to rewrite history to celebrate only the older vehicles they can remember in their relatively limited automotive encounters.

  • Da Only Skid

Yep, that’s how it looks when I see that in the rear view.
