If we were to give credit to a new report, then Alfa Romeo might be two weeks away from unveiling a brand new SUV of compact dimensions.
We’ve already heard this rumor from our own sources (hence the presence of the Alfa SUV in our Geneva Show list), and now Motor1 is reporting too that the Stelvio’s smaller sibling could be presented at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.
We’ll take this information with the proverbial pinch of salt, as it’s only a rumor. Nonetheless, we reached out to our FCA contacts hoping to find out more about it, so depending on what they have to say, we’ll either update this post or come back with a new one.
Announced last summer in Alfa’s official road map, this new compact SUV is thought to ride on a smaller version of the Giorgio platform, shared with the Giulia and Stelvio. This will ensure standard rear-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive, as well as electrified powertrains. At the top of the range, clients should expect a high-performance PHEV, with around 400 horsepower.
Another report claimed that the yet-unnamed compact SUV might share its nuts and bolts with the Jeep Renegade which, in turn, uses the same underpinnings as the Fiat 500X, 500L and Toro. We wouldn’t bet on it though, as the shrunken Grigio architecture would probably be the best candidate for the job.
Aside from the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLA, BMW X1 and Audi Q3 rival, Alfa Romeo has a flagship SUV in the pipeline as well. It will challenge the likes of the GLE, X5 and Q7, and based on previous reports, which also claimed the compact SUV would arrive in 2020, the flagship is expected in 2021.
Further down the road, the FCA-owned Italian company will also bring back some iconic nameplates, such as the GTV and 8C. They will also launch a new generation Giulietta based on the same RWD-biased platform as the compact SUV.
