2020 Ford Transit Debuts With Two New Engines, Optional AWD

The Ford Transit is entering the 2020 model year with of a host of new powertrains in the United States.

Starting under the hood, the updated van features a newly standard 3.5-liter PFDi V6 petrol engine. Ford didn’t mention performance specifications, but noted the new engine is more fuel-efficient than the previous 3.7-liter V6 – that produced 275 hp (205 kW / 279 PS) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque – thanks to port fuel and direct injection.

A new option for 2020 is a twin-turbo 2.0-liter EcoBlue four-cylinder diesel. Ford says the engine has more power and torque than the previous 3.2-liter diesel – which was rated at 185 hp (138 kW / 187 PS) and 350 lb-ft (474 Nm) of torque – and is also quieter and more fuel-efficient.

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 remains available and it now includes a start/stop system for improved fuel efficiency. Ford didn’t mention performance specifics, but the mill likely develops 310 hp (231 kW / 314 PS) and 400 lb-ft (541 Nm) of torque.

All of the engines are paired to a new ten-speed automatic transmission. It replaces the previous six-speed unit and helps to improve fuel efficiency even further.

The big news for 2020 is the addition of an optional all-wheel drive system. Available on vans with petrol engines, the system continuously monitors conditions and can send “100 percent of available torque to the front wheels to help prevent slipping on loose surfaces.” The system also has driver-selectable modes – including “mud and ruts” and “slippery” – to help improve traction in challenging conditions.

Exterior styling changes are limited, but the cargo and passenger variants can now be equipped with a new power sliding door. There’s also a new “Crew Van” model which can carry up to five people and their gear.

Bigger changes occur in the cabin as the van features a revised dashboard, new seat fabrics and upgraded grab handles. The model also has new air vents, optimized ergonomics and available swivel front seats.

Safety also takes center stage as the 2020 Transit now comes standard with forward collision warning, post-collision braking and auto high-beam headlights. The model also has a lane-keeping system and pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection.

The 2020 Ford Transit will arrive at dealerships this fall and pricing will be announced closer to launch.
