The new generation Volvo S60 will arrive at UK dealers on May 11 in the R-Design Edition spec, which is already on sale with a £37,920 ($49,829/€44,195) starting price.

Available at launch with a 250 PS (246 hp / 184 kW) T5 turbocharged petrol engine coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, it takes 6.5 seconds to hit 100 km/h (62 mph), returns between 35.3 and 39.9 mpg UK (8-7.1 lt/100 km / 29.4-33.2 mpg US) and emits 152 g/km of CO2.

Volvo says that new trim levels and powertrain options will be introduced later on, including AWD models and petrol-electric hybrids.

Described as “a sporty interpretation of the S60”, the R-Design Edition, with which the S60 launches, features a lowered sports suspension and 19-inch alloy wheels with contrast diamond cut and black finish.

The interior has a sporty vibe thanks to the combination of Nappa leather and fabric upholstery, black headlining and metal mesh trim. The front sports seats and steering wheel are heated and Volvo’s new premium compact saloon comes with a head-up display, Harman Kardon sound system and a 9-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration.

Aiding drivers are a number of safety systems such as the Pilot Assist, which controls the acceleration and braking while also assisting with the steering, and Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Collision Mitigation.

The 2019 S60 is being assembled at Volvo’s Ridgeville plant in South Carolina. From there, it’s being exported to Europe, and later this year to Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific (excluding China) as well.
