Trump Might Impose Tariffs On Car Imports From Mexico If Gov Doesn’t Stop Immigration, Drug Flow

President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on vehicle imports from Mexico unless America’s neighbor to the south puts in an effort to stop illegal immigration and drug trafficking into the U.S.

He even brought up the possibility of a 25% tariff so as to force Mexico’s hand speaking to reporters in the Cabinet Room of the White House on Thursday afternoon.

“Before we close the border we’ll put the tariffs on cars. I don’t think we’ll ever have to close the border because the penalty of tariffs on cars coming into the United States from Mexico at 25% will be massive,” he said, as reported by Autonews.

“A lot of good things are happening with Mexico. Mexico understands that we’re going to close the border, or I’m going to tariff the cars,” he added.

According to the President, Mexico now has one year at its disposal to enforce border security or face the consequences. Whether Trump will follow through with his threat, that’s a completely different story, seen as how his initial threat was to close the border this week – unless Mexico “immediately stop all illegal immigration coming into the United States through our southern border.”

Of course, stopping illegal immigration into the U.S. was a centerpiece for Trump during his 2016 run for the presidency. However, his attempts to build an actual wall on the border to stop migrants have mostly failed as Congress refused to fund such a project, which then led to Trump declaring a national emergency to divert funds from other projects.

As for Mexico’s position, Martha Barcena, the country’s ambassador to the U.S. told the Associated Press that they were working to make their border “more orderly” but that “migration will never be stopped.”

“A lot of good things are happening with Mexico. Mexico understands that we will close the border or I’m going to tariffs the cars. One or the other. Probably start off with the tariffs. That will be a powerful incentive. Because Mexico has the strongest immigration laws anywhere in the word. They don’t have courts like we do. We have a stupid system of courts. It’s the craziest thing in the world. We could be the only country that has it. You put a foot on the property, you put a foot into the United States, congratulations, go get Perry Mason to represent you. You end up with a court case. Then they release you and you come back four or five years later, but nobody comes back. 2% come back. The not so smart ones come back. It’s the most ridiculous system anyone has seen.

And we have catch and release and chain migration. Somebody comes in and brings the whole family. Your grandparents, brothers, sister, cousins. Craziest thing I’ve seen, put in by Democrats. The Democrats will straighten it out. If they don’t straighten it out, and I predicted this. I hate to see it but I can say I was right. I told everybody. You have a national emergency at our border and nobody even talks about drugs. The drugs that are flowing in.

For the last four days, and you actually have covered it, to a very minor extent, Mexico has been capturing people and bringing them back to their countries at their southern border. They have been taking people, under their very powerful laws they have the right to do it, and they’re bringing them back to where they came from. It’s been three days since they heard I was going to close the border.

But before I close the border, if Mexico, and we love Mexico, we love the country of Mexico. We have two problems. We have the fact that they allow people to pour into our country. We have to stop them. Border patrol and ICE have been incredible. The other problem is drugs.

Massive amount, most of the drug, much of the drugs coming into our country come through the southern border. In all different ways. Much of it where we don’t have walls. The wall is under construction, by the way. We’ll be meeting on Friday at a piece of the wall we have completed. A big piece. A lot of it is being built now. A lot of it is being signed up right now by different contractors. It’s moving along nicely. We need the wall but we need lots of other things.

We need help from Mexico. If Mexico doesn’t give the help, that’s okay, we will tariff their cars coming into the United States. The other thing is because Mexico is such a big source of drugs, unfortunately, unfortunately, now we have China sending fentanyl to Mexico to come into the United States. It’s not acceptable.

The second aspect of it is, which you haven’t heard before, is that if the drugs don’t stop –Mexico can stop them if they want– we’ll tariff the cars. The cars are very big. If that doesn’t work, we’ll close the border. I think that will work. It’s massive numbers.

If we don’t see people apprehended and brought back to their countries, if we see the massive caravans coming up to our country, right through Mexico like nothing. Buses are even given to them. The last three days it hasn’t happened since we said we’re closing the border. The only thing better, but less drastic, than closing the border is to tariff the cars coming in. I will do it. I don’t play games. I’ll do it.

We’re doing it to stop people. We’re going to give them a one-year warning and if the drugs don’t stop, or largely stop, we’ll put tariffs on Mexico and products, in particular cars. The whole ball game is cars. It’s the big ball game with many countries it’s cars. If that doesn’t stop the drugs, we close the border. Because Mexico, last year, and over for many years, just like China, except China numbers are even bigger. I don’t blame China and Mexico if they can get away with it. I blame the people that used to sit in this seat because they should have done something about it.

I’m not just talking about President Obama, I’m talking about many presidents. They should have done something about it.

So, if Mexico doesn’t do what they can do very easily, apprehend these people coming in, and they can do it in a very humane fashion. Why should they walk up 2,000 miles and then be brought back? They can stop them at their southern border, right where they come into Mexico.”

Is there no where i can go to get away from news about this clown

    • MayTheBestCarWin05

They always put trump’s face on every article about him. What a terrible president. All talk but no actions. SMH this website and their madness. Btw, let see these trumptards attacking me with their bogus comments.

    • europeon

      Bogus comment attacking you.

    • Mr. EP9

Why wouldn’t they put his face on the article considering he’s the main subject.

  • Tydogg123 .

So he still doesn’t understand how tariffs work, it seems.

  • MayTheBestCarWin05

does anyone take his ‘threats’ seriously anymore? He puffs up all “fire and fury” and then NOTHING.

He’s like a pit bull with zero teeth.

    • Enter Ranting

Everything he says and does is a baldly desperate attempt to distract from the fact that he’s absolutely incompetent and corrupt. End of story.

  • performante

Perhaps he should control his people consuming all the drugs?

    • DM

Exactly. If people keep buying drugs then organizations will supply them. Tackle the problem starting from home.

    • hahahaha, bingo

    • MayTheBestCarWin05

  • Liam Paul

trump needs to stick to one thing and do it or shut up, as for taffis on cars, start with GM and Ford, let them pay a 25% tariff only because their f’king the american worker over!

    • Craig

      I agree.

  • Jason Miller

    Is it 2020 yet?

    • Six_Tymes

yeah, because you wouldn’t want to stop the drug flow or murderers

      • designer_dick

It’s funny how you talk like drugs have only recently begun to flow across the US-Mexico border, and haven’t been doing so for DECADES. It’s even funnier how you think his orange buffoon will be able to do anything about it, other than making embarrassingly rambling public statements and issuing ridiculous threats he has no intention of backing up.

The only thing he’s trying to do is fire up his base by appearing to be tough on illegal immigration. He won’t actually achieve anything with his half-hearted ‘fire and fury’ rhetoric.

        • Merc1

        • Craig

“His base.” lol Contrary to what people like you might think – that’s not just 5 fat guys in a trailer.

      • Dude

Can we get some competency to go with that idea? First it was “I’m shutting down the border in a week” and now it’s “I might apply tariffs in a year”. And this hilariously led to a moment of near self-awareness where Rs were all “wait this won’t affect drug trafficking and only punishes working Americans” as if a multi-billion dollar wall wouldn’t do the exact same thing.

      • Enter Ranting

You do know that the Sackler family is responsible for the opioid crisis, right? And that they’re Americans? Perdue Pharma ring a bell? But sure, let’s put a 25% tariff on a Chevy built in Mexico. That’ll solve it!

  • Dude

I don’t know what’s more sad, the tin foil hat wearing zelot here or the milquetoast centrist garnering upvotes there.

    • MayTheBestCarWin05

Hi Dude. I think you’re referring to me as the milquetoast centrist??

While my initial reaction is to write you off since your contribution to this thread begins with name calling….however, I’m going to go against that reaction to ask….

Do you have anything of substance to contribute to the conversation?

Or are you here to troll (which is fine, bc someone has to fill that role)?

      Either way, let me know.

      Your friendly neighborhood centrist.

      • Dude

Oh come on lol. The jumping point for this dialog was “lIbRaLs ArE cAnCeR” and some enlightened centrism. How can you ask me for contribution when those are the half baked contributions I’m responding to? Tbf, your personal perspective as a Seattle resident is appreciated but everything outside of that was just the ‘le both sides’ meme in long form. If you want some real wisdom from me here you go: if you don’t want to appear, to put it very, very kindly, milquetoast, don’t equate the far left and far right. They are not comparable.

    • Craig

      Grow up little man.

      • Dude

Why don’t you cry about liberals some more. That was way better than your sad attempt at insults.

        • Craig

          How brave!

          • Dude

I’m sure having common sense and an ounce of self-awareness appears brave you someone like you…

          • Craig

I have no doubt that you are very SELF aware. But that’s the problem. But common sense? lol Think again. Like I already said… Liberalism is a cancer. Liberals [like yourself] are the enemy of EVERYONE.

          • Dude

There’s those tears. With a wonderful dash of not knowing what self-awareness means. Which very ironically shows that you definitely have zero self-awareness. It’d be great if in between sips of your Fox-brand trumρ flavored kool-air you could do some introspection and maybe seek some much-needed education and perspective.
Save yourself the future embarrassment being part of the group that the world has looked down on since the 30s. If you actually knew the history of American Conservatism (or took an open look its contemporary) you wouldn’t be spouting such garbage. Honestly your comments are so similar to quotes from regrettables throughout history that I’m wondering if you’re actually 100 years old.

          • Craig

            You’re an idiot.

          • Dude

My god lmao this is pathetic. Can you not read? I know I wrote a lot but I assumed you were an adult. If I had known that two paragraphs was too much for you to actually respond to then I wouldn’t have bothered.

          • Craig

Typical vain liberal. “How could he NOT be persuaded by MY genius!” lol

          • Dude

Bold of you to assume that I care about you at all. You clearly don’t have the intelligence or open mindedness that’d allow you to be capable of change. My comments simply point out idiocy for everyone else who might actually take you seriously (unlikely but still). However, I do remain shocked at how deep you have your head in the sand. You’re almost robotic. It’s disappointing tbh.

          • Craig

When someone calls you an ‘idiot’ that means they have NO respect for you OR for what you think or feel. NONE. So go away.

          • Dude

Ok? Again, you must be pretty self-centered and ignorant to assume that your respect is anything but worthless and your dogma of not placing value on the words of someone who obviously has more sense than you doesn’t surprise me at all. It was painfully clear from your first comment. Try and re-read my previous comment if you’re having difficulty understanding.

Also, um, “go away”? Are you 12? If you’re scared to talk to me or something just… don’t talk to me? This isn’t that complicated; please keep up.

  • Afi Keita James

Time to hit mexico where it hurts, no more lame cars, especially the current disastrous chevy blazer.

    • Dude

How is the Blazer “disastrous” lol? Only the UAW hates it afaik.

  • Enter Ranting

Feckless businessman who has no idea how tariffs work continues to flail around uselessly.

  • Ben

    Hit em’ where it hurts!

  • Craig

Dude, Lloyd Anthony, Maximilian, rodriguez256, Maher, Stig, Perry, Kurt Kokaine and MayTheBest. Did ANY OF YOU actually WATCH the video? Or do you just ‘know in your heart’ that it can’t be true?

  • Craig

Shame on you for daring to suggest that it’s only those afraid of change that are objecting to what’s happening to Seattle. I asked already – but I’ll ask again. Did YOU watch the video?

  • Six Thousand Times

That idiot can’t be gone soon enough.

  • Alexandro Pietro

You Americans should decide: Mexico stays with yours Industries and still send poor people immigrants to America:Both advantages to the mexicans!!
