BMW M2 Competition, M4 And Others Recalled Over Potentially Faulty Airbags

If you just bought a new BMW M2 Competition, M4 Coupe or M4 Convertible, you might not be thrilled to find out that it is already been recalled…

Announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the safety campaign includes the 2019 and 2020 model years and counts the lesser versions of both cars, too, namely the 230i, 230i xDrive, M240i, M240i xDrive, 430i, 430i xDrive, 440i and 440i xDrive, as well as the 2019 330i xDrive Sportswagon.

A total of 5,079 units are potentially affected by a defective airbag module. In the recall description, the NHTSA explains that the knee airbag assemblies for the driver and front passenger could have been improperly folded and assembled into the housing. As a result, they might fail to inflate adequately in the event of an accident, thus increasing the risk of injury. The problem has been identified by the supplier, Romania-based Joyson Safety Systems.

BMW will notify dealers of the action who will replace the airbag modules free of charge. Owners will hear from the automaker in the coming weeks, as the recall is expected to kick off on July 2. Those who may have questions on the topic, can contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or the BMW Customer Service at 1-800-525-7417. The fix will be carried out free of charge and those who have already replaced the potentially defective parts won’t be reimbursed, as this would’ve been covered by the warranty.

    I’m having deja-vu. It’s 2019 and we’re still having airbag problems.

Then again, it’s also 2019 and measles have returned in full force.

Well at least it wasn’t Takata this time and there is, thankfully, a fix for it. You can’t fix anti-vaxxer stupidity though.
