Hoons Shut Down Detroit Freeway To Do Donuts

Detroit has a long history of illegal street racing, but what happened recently on the John C. Lodge Freeway has sparked outrage.

In clips that went viral over the weekend, a number of Dodge Chargers can be seen blocking the freeway so other can perform donuts on the heavily traveled road. The cars take turns as several people exit their vehicles to cheer them on.

The freeway appears to have been blocked for several minutes and unsurprisingly a number of motorists apparently called 911. The clip end as people flee the scene before police arrive.

The incident has police upset and determined to catch those responsible. On Saturday, the department took to Twitter to reveal a 25-year old man was arrested for reckless driving in his Dodge Charger. At the time, police chief James Craig said “We are not going to tolerate this blatant disregard for public safety in our city.”

Craig followed up today with a press conference where said he loves muscle cars, but noted their is a safe and sane way to appreciate them. Craig went on to say the man who was arrested over the weekend was caught, in part, thanks to his distinctive green Charger SRT Hellcat. The man doesn’t live in the city of Detroit and officials threw the book at him as cited for not having a driver’s license as well as minor things such as noise complaints and having illegally tinted windows.

Craig added that police have identified six other vehicles involved in the shutdown of the Lodge. The investigation is ongoing, but the department is committed to arresting those involved and potentially seizing their vehicles.

That’s what people do if they are generally happy and contented, with a realistic self image, right?

    • Dude

Self image is probably that of an insanely egotistical narcissist. The sad thing is that they probably are happy. Too often I’ve found that terrible, inconsiderate people are completely content with their lives and actions. It sucks.

    +1 for ‘Murica!
In all honesty, those Hemi Chargers n’ Challengers do bring out the childish best in all of us!

    • Matt

Yeah… they should have let them keep doing burnouts on a busy freeway. Stopping them is ‘oppression’…

Let me guess, you’re too slow to get what i’m trying to say on my comments. Maybe you support cops and their BS harassment, right

I rented a charger last week and did donuts on a deserted street while I was waiting for a train to pass. Nobody was around though… and I’m 43. I’m not saying that I would do something like this, but I understand. They are young males with 300 – 500 hp at their foot. I remember what I did in a 125 hp Honda Civic when I was 18 so I can only imagine what I would do if I had a HEMI. Again, I’m not condoning their actions, but I understand. How could I not, I’m a car guy and most car guys have done stupid stuff with their cars, whether it’s driving waaaaay above the speed limit, racing from light to light. drifting around a corner, etc. It’s difficult for me to cast a stone on a car website knowing what I have done in my youth. IJS.

Just because people have a different opinion to you, doesn’t make them ‘scum’. I never commented on the police force as a whole, merely your conflation with this particular incident. This article is not about police harassment. These drivers were idiots and the police stopped them from potentially hurting other road users. Because of the police, nobody was hurt.
