Volvo Could Be Targeting The BMW X7 With A Large Flagship SUV

In the constant chase of filling almost every major segment, Volvo wouldn’t say no to a larger SUV to sit above the XC90.

A rival to the likes of the BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS, the vehicle was hinted at by Hakan Samuelsson. The CEO told AutoExpress that a flagship SUV is under consideration.

“We are not excluding the idea of additions, especially in very core segments like the SUV”, said Samuelsson. “I think we are looking into this possibility right now. You should not exclude the idea that there might be a bigger one, but maybe also a smaller one. We will surprise you about that in the future.”

The small SUV, which would sit under the X1-rivaling XC40, was already hinted at months ago by the company’s head honcho.  At the time, he told the British publication “never say never” when asked about the potential addition of a smaller range of cars.

While an official decision is still pending, it’s thought that the rumored sub-40 family might get battery-electric power. Volvo is also considering expanding the charging infrastructure, because “when somebody has an electric car, they need a good concept on how to charge them”, Samuelsson admitted.

Before coming to an outcome, the Swedish auto firm will likely expand the new 40 range, which currently includes the XC40 premium subcompact SUV. And they will do so with the successor of the V40 which, according to a previous report, could become more of a crossover than an Audi A3 Sportback, BMW 1-Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class rivalling hatchback.

    Why not!

    So XC190, XC220?

    • McFly

They already own the XC100 trademark, so that’s an option.

  • Cobrajet

It’s already doing that with the XC90, they just need make the next one more third row friendly.

Next to the GLS and X7, isn’t it small though? I can’t wait to see what said flagship SUV will bring out.

“the successor of the V40 which (…) could become more of a crossover”

Let me guess: that means the wagon version of the Polestar 2 will be a Volvo.

    XC100 & XC20?

They could use a new letter nomenclature to introduce a large sized lux category, should they also want a model more luxurious and bigger than the s90, which the chinese market would like

  • sidewaysspin

    Bigger than that monster?

      Bentley / Roller challenger…..?

This bubble will pop soon and someone is going to get caught with their fingers in the cookie jar. Keep building these SUVs and you’re gonna have problems.

the smartest way to print money for Volvo and they should do it. They have an excellent platform and product on their hands. Make an imposing design, push the luxury quotient, and you have the success that the big players enjoy for a small cost to get in. The SPA platform surely can accommodate a larger vehicle.

Volvo has ICE engines with 4 cylinder only, in this classe of luxury and opulence…no way, even a hybrid with a 4 cyl isn’t good enough.
