Skoda Kamiq Subcompact SUV Could Be The Segment’s New Champion

The Kamiq is Skoda’s entry into one of Europe’s hottest segments, and the first signs are more than positive.

The new Kamiq is positioned underneath the Karoq in the brand’s SUV range but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s not roomy enough for a family; on the contrary, Skoda’s decision to give it a longer wheelbase than its bigger brother created one of the roomiest -if not the roomiest- models in this class.

Moreover, while its styling probably won’t win any “design of the year” awards, it does look more interesting and playful than other Skodas. Sure, the headlight configuration with the LED strip of DRLs sitting on top is something we’ve already seen from others, like Hyundai and Citroen, but even so it makes the Kamiq look modern.

The interior is another highlight of the small Skoda SUV. Whereas its cousin, the VW T-Cross, gets lots of hard plastics, the Kamiq comes with a much more pleasing dashboard and the door panels made out of a more plush, soft-touch materials, which is certainly a surprise.

Customers can choose between three petrol, one diesel and one CNG engines. The range kicks off with the 1,0-liter TSI, which is offered in 95 and 115PS guise. The range-topping choice is the 1.5-liter TSI with 150PS, offered with either a manual or a DSG transmission. The 115PS 1.6-liter TDI is the sole diesel, while the 90PS, 1.0-liter G-TEC runs on compressed natural gas. In any case, power is directed to the front wheels and there’s no AWD option whatsoever.

What Car delivers its first driving impressions on the new Skoda Kamiq, and judging from their findings, the competition has a stiff new rival to contend with.

  • Matthijs

Average driving skills, it’s just roomy in the back. Design looks dated and bland to me. New champion? LOL

    • no25

welcome to typical C S journalism lmao

  • Wayne Alan Carr Heyes

But we’re is the design ? It’s such a bland car ! Inside and out I don’t get Skoda at all !

    • JRP

All Škodas look the same. I will include BMW, Cadillac, Audi, Volkswagen, Jaguar, Porsche, Ferrari, and Mercedes-Benz. Get some originality!

  • jfalckt

Sure is a complete, solid and good car. If only it didn’t look so forgettable.

  • erly5

The design of the Kamiq is about as exciting as a dishcloth. It’s up there with the Karoq. Just how much more forgettable can Skoda’s designs get?

  • Rimas Kurtinaitis

No Skoda buyer cares about the vehicle’s design, for god’s sake; they just want a reliable family car for a reasonable price. It’s a very good little car, and it’s its features and space that raise it towards the top. If you want design, get a DS3 Crossback – and miss out on all the reasonable traits that will actually be useful every day.

    • jfalckt

When you put it like that no one in their right mind would chose a DS3 Crossback over this.

      • Rimas Kurtinaitis

(Though such vehicles always have a market.)

  • Bash

The car looks dated already, and that front end? Seriously? They should have just called it Skoda Vomit instead.

  • no25

Can this headlight trend die already?

  • Miknik

    I can’t help but this thing does not look like a cross over at all. It lacks the “On stilts” look of most competitors (including larger Skoda CUVs) that the CUV customers look for;

  • ThatGuy

Wish we got this in our market.
