This Is How The 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class May Look Like

A new S-Class is in the works and this video offers a glimpse of the direction Merc’s designers might take.

Recent spy images of the car have revealed that its exterior will be drastically altered for the 2020 model year. Up front, the new S-Class will receive distinctive headlights and a newly-shaped grille, while the rear will sport taillights similar to the new CLS. If this rendering video is anything to go by, then these changes will make the new luxury sedan stand out from its predecessor.

We happen to think that the current S-Class looks pretty good for a sedan of its size. For example, the large headlights and taillights are in perfect proportion to the overall size of the sedan. By comparison, we think the headlights and taillights of the new S-Class rendered are a little too small for such a big car, but this is a render so it’s not certain that this is exactly how the new car will look.

Exterior aside, Mercedes-Benz is also working hard to overhaul the interior of the new S-Class with recent spy shots revealing an all-new look. Taking pride of place in the cabin will be a Tesla-like touchscreen where all of the vehicle’s infotainment functions, and possibly air conditioning/heating controls, will be located, while drivers will have a new digital instrument cluster at their disposal.

We’re told the all new S-Class will feature hybrid 2.9-liter and 3.0-liter petrol and diesel inline-six engines, with an all-electric range of up to 62 miles (100 km). The new S-Class will still be offered in S 63 guise with the company’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which will also get 48-volt mild-hybrid tech.

I hope the new S Class doesn’t look like that it looks generic and Korean. The current one still looks special fantastic and blows the competition out of the water. I’m really glad I do not have to design Mercedes cars it is not an easy job.

    • bd0007

The W222 is the epitome of generic.

  • no25

I stand with what I said in the spy shot posts about how the current and past taillights continued to show how elegant and classy the SClass is. These new ones (and yes, this is just a model, but the spy shots suggest something very similar) make the SClass look like it’s trying to be too aggressive. The SClass just isn’t that. Leave that for the CClass and EClass.

    • no25

Also can’t wait for Merc1 to try to tell everyone that either it looks good and we’re all just blind or that it’ll look better than this because its a Mercedes and he just knows everything about them. lmao

      • Matt

Well in his defense you’re critiquing the design of a car that nobody has seen. A bit premature for victory laps…

waiting for that comment too…or how he thinks it looks so much better than the Audi A8..

      • Merc1

Yeah you’ve pretty much proven that you’re simply not able to keep up with anything or get anything right. Do you really not grasp that this is just a piss poor render? I mean you can’t be that limited can you? You’re literally making up crap just because at this point, things I’ve never said about a render or drawing……that means nothing. You’re calling this a model, which it isn’t an official model from Mercedes. Face it you’re clueless.

        M

        • OS

That was so poorly written lol. Please come back to this piss poor article when Mercedes reveals the next gen S Class and it looks exactly like this..

        • no25

No, dummy. I am calling it a model because the video is a “model render.” You are by far the stupidest person on here. I love it.

      • no25
  • iggination

Nope! I hate the new interior, and looks like I will also be hating the new exterior. The current gen is near perfect imo.

  • enthusia

Aren’t the door handles supposed to be retractable or am I making that up? Anyways, I think this is pretty true to how it will look, and I’m not liking it one bit. They really hit it out of the park with the current gen S class, but everything since has been uninspired and dull…

    • SD38439

Exactly,. But most Mercedes vehicles have looked cheap for quite a long time now.

  • An Existing Person

Mercedes sure have their work cut out for them because it’s going to be VERY difficult to do better than the W222 in terms of design. The current S-Class is near perfect.

    • bd0007

The W222 is bland and doesn’t hold a candle to the W126.

      • Merc1

Overall the W222 is complete winner. What car holds anything to an 80’s Benz in design? Those Sacco era cars are untouchable, but the W222 steamrolled the market from day one.

There is nothing bland about the W222 IMO. I mean you think the A8 or giant Kia looks better?

        M

        • bd0007

Well, disagree – the lines are too soft (hence, losing the imposing look of say, the W140) and the shape of the headlights are a complete meh.

Nevertheless, better than the W220 and W221 which were the low points of S Class design.

          • pissedoffjuicebox

They are much better than the hideous W211 E-class with those disgusting split round headlights.

Though I agree with you regarding the W220 and W221.

  • FordMopar

Yes it’s just a rendering. It’s too upright on the rear that’s what it’s making look bad and too Korean-looking. Just hope the real thing is way better than this render.

    • bd0007

      What the heck is “Korean-looking”?

      • SD38439

Korean automobiles, or Asian in general, are known for having a mishmashed cluster of generic design features. Somehow this has reached European and American brands, creating a sort of Asian-fusion look all over. Mercedes and BMW in particular lost all sense of direction a few decades ago and have been this way since.

        • bd0007

All automakers borrow design cues from each other (as designers all graduate from the same few design schools and influence each other).

For instance, Mercedes started to stretch out their headlights b/c (1) wanted to do something diff. from what they have always done and (2) give their vehicles a more modern look.

And a while back ago, MB started to “flame surface” their body panels after Hyundai had made it a staple of their “fluidic sculpture” design language, which, itself, was picked up from the Bangle-era at BMW.

Even the so-called “Hofmeister kink” that BMW is known for was borrowed from another (now dead) automaker.

      • FordMopar

Look at current Kia Forte rear end.

        • bd0007

Doesn’t make any sense – since Hyundai, Kia and now Genesis (much less foreign-owned brands like Ssangyong or Samsung Renault) all have very disparate design languages.

Plus, most of the designers at Hyundai, Kia and Genesis are either European or American, and the rear of the current Forte (as well as the overall design) has a very Euro look.

          • FordMopar

You really are gonna drag this out? I’m not the only one who mentioned Korean styling.

  • Navigator Navy✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ🍑

    Absolutely hideous!

  • Bash

I like it, but I’m sure a out the C pillar.

  • Carenthusiast

Pretty awful attempt! I bet new S Class will look tonnes better than this. However, not sure the interior would be as good as the current one.

  • Richard Taylor

I’m sure the silhouette is largely accurate and I know the artist has taken inspiration from what we could see behind the camouflage in recent spy pics. Can’t help but imagine there will be a light-bar at the rear end, and that grille shape – it’s a little more imitation-Merc than actual Merc. I’d hazard a guess the grille and lights will echo that of recent new models like the A-Class, but given this is a flagship, perhaps it’ll head in a less aggressive direction (which could also be applied to the next E-Class). Anyway, it’s guess work for now, we’ll find out soon enough.

  • slither16

    Mercedes is going hexagon too.

    • bd0007

They already have for several models (but in a muted form).

At first I thought it was the image of the 2020 S-Class with ALFA wheels.

  • Knotmyrealname

    No.
It looks weak, without any rake or purposeful stance.
Nice modelling and supporting vid though.

    • Andrewthecarguy

Yep. And if it happens to look like this then it would be a real disaster. There would be no contentiously styled big limo. My vote is for the LCI 7, especially in M Sport or ALPINA B7 guise, and will DEFINITELY remain the same if the upcoming S looks like this.

  • Avery Holder

I think they do it on purpose.

  • designer_dick

Well, it’s not exactly an eleganza extravaganza, is it? The CG is excellent, but the design is too upright and bulky, lacking the current car’s swept back, rather imperious stance. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/082874a921e88a8147cd8df1df99cab1489783793f3f5c2aff0a3a82bddcbac8.jpg
