The Frankfurt International Motor Show, also known in Germany as the Internationale Automobil Ausstellung (or IAA for short), is here. Alternating with Paris every year (see our 2018 coverage here), it’s one of the world’s largest auto shows and one of the most important events in the motoring calendar.

The highlights

There’s plenty of lustrous new metal landing in Frankfurt, from highly-anticipated production cars like the Porsche Taycan electric sports sedan, the next Land Rover Defender, the Honda E and Lamborghini’s latest supercar, to fascinating concepts such as Hyundai’s retro-modern 45 EV, BMW’s Vision M Next and Mercedes’ EQS electric sports sedan.

The absentees

Many brands these days pick and choose which international shows they’ll attend, and the IAA in Frankfurt is no exception. At least 23 major brands have opted to skip this year’s event, including Alpine, Aston Martin, Citroen, Dacia, DS, Ferrari, FCA’s Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Chrysler, and Jeep brands, GM’s Chevy and Cadillac, Infiniti, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Rolls Royce, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota and Volvo.

Opening Dates

This year, the international press days take place on Tuesday, September 10, and Wednesday, September 11, 2019, with the doors at the Frankfurt Messe opening to the public from Saturday, September 14, through Sunday, September 22, 2019.
