Watch A Pair Of Porsche 918 Spyders Give Much More Powerful Rivals A Good Lesson

It has been six years since Porsche commenced production of the 918 Spyder, and despite the threat from exciting, and much more powerful, new electric hypercars, it’s still one of the fastest cars to roam the earth.

During a recent Supercar Owners Circle Event in Andermatt, Switzerland, a pair of 918 Spyders hit an empty air strip for a series of drag races against some of the most accelerative vehicles on the market, including a Bugatti Chiron, McLaren 720S, Bugatti Veyron Vitesse, Pagani Huayra Roadster, and a Zenvo TSR-S.

The first race featured is the best, as it shows a one-of-two Acid Green 918s racing a black and red Chiron. Both get off the line with frightening pace, but it is the less powerful and lighter Porsche that accelerates quicker and proceeds to open up a gap to the Chiron of about one car length. From there, the more than 600 HP advantage enjoyed by the Bugatti comes into play and it quickly streaks ahead, but even so, the 918 gave it a good scare.

In the other races, including one against a Veyron Vitesse and an 720S Spider, driver mistakes off the line probably ruined the chances of close races. However, we suspect the 918 would have jumped off the line faster than both and was only been caught by the Veyron about mid-way down the strip.

Porsche has been happy to admit that it is considering a successor to the 918 Spyder, but has yet to decide what direction it should take, with one option being the adoption of an all-electric powertrain using technology developed by Rimac, with whom it has formed a partnership.
