Does The Ford Ranger Raptor Work As A Family Car?

Pickup trucks used to target those who are not afraid to get their hands dirty and whose routines used to include hauling large stuff, sometimes off the beaten path. With their popularity having risen considerably, though, some of today’s workhorses have been softened up, and look good inside and out.

One head-turning pickup is the new Ford Ranger Raptor, which is actually UK’s only performance oriented truck. It will set you back almost £40,000 ($51,360/€46,250), excluding tax, has lower payload and towing capacities compared to the regular Ranger and is not as quick as it looks.

Unlike America’s larger F-150 Raptor, which is a true beast in every sense of the word, the Ranger packs a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder diesel equipped with a couple of turbochargers and paired to a 10-speed auto. On paper, it sounds good, but it only kicks out 210 hp (213 PS / 157 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. It takes a while to accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) – 10.5 seconds, to be exact – and, if the road allows it, it will eventually max out at 106 mph (170 km/h).

So, is there anything to it besides the sporty styling, wider track and chunky rubber? Actually, yes, because Ford has upgraded the chassis and added bigger brakes. The result is a great balance between comfort and responsiveness, so you may not be able to beat a regular compact hatchback in a straight line duel, but you will be encouraged to attack corners at higher speeds, be it on- or off-road, as the Ranger Raptor functions very good on arduous terrains, too. But can you actually use it for the usual daily chores and, more importantly, as a family car?

Yeah, if you’re a red neck, $50,000 family car, right, what a joke!

      Get a life Smith. Just because you don’t need/use a truck…

Where I live, the most prevalent bumper sticker reads “I Farm, You Eat”. The “”tourists” are the ones driving sedans.

  • Bash

I say why not. specially if your family is active, I mean if you go sorta remote area on weekly basis. I know at least a handful of families who has embraced that life style and encouraged their children to be so..

My qualm about the Ranger, all Rangers is why is it so high off the ground?
The door handles are almost as high as the lady’s shoulders, the bed walls are as high as her shoulders. If you were throwing anything heavy into the box, it is a lift up.

    • SteersUright

If that’s an issue, then you’d likely do better with a minivan, CUV, station wagon and a number of others. It’s high off the ground by design, because many want the ground clearance.

      • db

You know, I get that, especially on the Ranger in this article, being a Raptor that was specially designed for rougher going but the “street Ranger” should have at least one more city friendly model.

Some of us just wanted a smaller F-150 for just moving stuff around, like household furniture, boxes, mulch etc.

        • SteersUright

Wouldnt a minivan or Honda Ridgeline work much better then?

          • db

Can the minivan idea but a Ridgeline is right up my alley but, I’m not trying to sound too much like a homer but I prefer to stick with the one of the D3.

            Maybe I am a little bit of a homer…

It is Aussie designed and conceived, It is not a truck. It is not a pickup. It is a UTE (short for utility). FFS it is too small to be a ‘truck’ although I know Americans like to call anything bigger than a sedan a truck. Only in America!

Here in South Africa, we call it a “bakkie”. It roughly translates to “little bowl”.

We have been using ours’ for 4 months as a family vehicle and works great living on a farm…

    • p23w

I live in an area with many farmers. Most have Raptors. The real work gets done by the Super Duties. I’m starting to see the sons and daughters in Rangers (Ranger Raptors included). Nice package from what I can tell.

Definitely has an air of coolness given the big tires and ground clearance. But, not quite the finished product it should’ve been at its price point. The GM Colorado Bison is more appealing, despite it horrifically cheapo interior. There really isnt any truck out there that is as good as it should be likely due to the huge profit margins on them. None have interiors that rival even a base A4, 3-series, or Lexus ES, despite $50k+ prices. None, have the ride refinement you’d expect from big cushy tires and tons of suspension travel and compliance. None feel particularly well made. Even the Raptor, which many consider the best of the bunch, feels like an expression of corner-cutting and limited budgets in its fit & finish. Would love to see Lexus offer a version of the Tundra to take on the Raptor and with a proper Lexus-level interior.
