Jay Leno Talks Upcoming ‘Ford v Ferrari’ Movie With Matt Damon

Ford v Ferrari, a film chronicling the battle between the two automakers for Le Mans supremacy during the 1960s will hit theaters next month, and Jay Leno recently had the chance to discuss the upcoming movie with none other than Matt Damon.

The actor plays Carroll Shelby in the film and is immediately put to work by Leno in re-creating an iconic image of Shelby featured on the cover of Road & Track, depicting him with a bright red jacket and standing between a Shelby Cobra, a Mustang and an original GT40 race car. The only difference is that, for this photo-op, in place of an original GT racer sits a new Ford GT.

The story of Ford and Ferrari’s battle at Le Mans is the stuff of legends. Ford had long been looking to purchase Ferrari and just before a deal was struck, Enzo Ferrari decided to call it off. Henry Ford was so frustrated that he demanded the American car manufacturer do whatever it would take to beat Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Ford first raced the GT40 in 1964. Initially, things didn’t go very well, as the first example retired during the Nurburgring 1000 km race and, three weeks later, all three GT40s running in Le Mans suffered the same fate. The following year, the Fords were again crippled by unreliability and Ferrari easily won. Then, in 1966, the Blue Oval turned things around and claimed first, second, and third at Le Mans, blowing away the Ferrari team. Moreover, the GT40 went on to win in 1967, 1968 and 1969 as well.

Ford v Ferrari hits U.S. theaters on November 15.

Does Jay Leno have any other shirt than the fade jean shirt?

    • Astonman

I’ve seen him a few times and only twice have I’ve seen him wear something different – Pebble Beach and the recent Corvette introduction.

      • db

No get me wrong, I love the man. He makes great videos, he reviews cars with humbleness and humility but in every video, he is wearing the same (type) of jean shirt. I don’t know if it is a tv “costume” or he just likes jean shirts.

        • Astonman

No – I understood you were making an observation and I’ve thought the same thing over the times I’ve seen him in the So Cal area.

        • Porkopolis

Even when he was host of the Tonight Show, he supposedly only lived off his stand-up money. A thrifty way of life that allowed him to have a lot of money for toys later on. Now he just plays with his toys and doesn’t care what he wears every day. He’s got corny jokes, but he’s a true car nut who did a lot of things the right way.

Smart guy. Many of us fall victim to the consumerism that is all around us. I applaud folks who can save money over the years and build their worth up and not be hostages to the system.

So looking forward to seeing this movie in NZ!

    Can’t wait for this movie!

  • Craig

I always cringe whenever I see people SIT on cars! But maybe that’s just me. That said… could be a good movie. Let’s hope!

It is a movie or a “propaganda”?

  • p23w

Don’t know Matt Damon. Keep thinking he was the guy who filled in on Top Gear for several years. Jay Leno, I get. Car guy all the way. Agree with other posters about his garb. Hey it’s his show he gets to dress as he wishes. The movie? I like Fords, can’t afford a Ferrari (or I’m sure I’d like them to). I just hope it is historically correct because there is a wealth of information of how the Ford challenge came to be, and Hollywood is not known for historical accuracy.
