Earlier today, we brought you the first leaked photos of the McLaren 620R, a track-focused special that is essentially the road-going version of the 570S GT4 racer.

Coincidence or not, our photographers snapped a few shots of an undisguised 620R prototype during testing, giving us a better picture of what is essentially a race car that can be driven legally on public roads. As the name suggests, the 620R will sit at the top of McLaren’s Sports Series, above even the 600LT.

This will be obvious in the looks department, as the 620R adopts a hardcore aero kit inspired by the 570S GT4 racer. The package consists of a massive fixed rear wing, aggressive front fascia and splitter, canards on either side of the front bumper, vented bonnet, as well as a huge rear diffuser and identical exhausts.

Mind you, the McLaren 620R looks even more radical than the GT4 racer as it adds a large roof scoop similar to the one first seen on the 1 of 10 570S MSO X commissioned by McLaren Newport Beach last year. The staggered light alloy wheels are clearly motorsport-inspired as well.

Under the skin, the McLaren 620R is expected to feature hardware from the 570S GT4 racer, including carbon ceramic brakes as well as adjustable coilover springs and dampers. Power will come from a 3.8-liter V8 engine derived from the McLaren 600LT with 620 PS (611 HP) on tap. Needless to say, it will trump every Sports Series model when it comes to performance.

As you would expect from a race car for the road, the cockpit will be stripped out of all unnecessary things and will feature bucket seats, six-point harnesses, and a lot of carbon fiber.

For now, no pricing details are available but you need not worry about that as Autocar learned that the 620R will be offered to select customers by invitation only.
