Mercedes-Benz E-Class, AMG E63 S Estates Recalled As Rear Spoiler Could Fly Away

The mounting of the tailgate spoiler on certain Mercedes-Benz E-Class models may not have been done accordingly, so it could detach, thus becoming a road hazard to other vehicles and/or pedestrians.

As a result, the German automaker, in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is conducting a safety recall for 4,765 units of the executive wagon, out of which only 5 percent are estimated to have the defect.

Included in this safety campaign are the E400 4Matic, E450 4Matic and AMG E63 S estates, all of which were made between October 6, 2016, and January 9, 2019.

In the description of the defect, the feds note: “Due to a deviation in the production process, the rear spoiler might not have been mounted according to current production specifications”. So, how would you know if your spoiler is about to detach? According to the NHTSA, you might hear rattling noises just before the part flies off…

Technicians will inspect all cars and, where necessary, correct the mounting. All work will be made free of charge, but those who have already made the repairs on their own will not be reimbursed, as the defect would have been covered by the warranty anyway.

Owners of the aforementioned E-Class Estates should have been contacted by Mercedes-Benz USA by now, as the recall was supposed to begin last Friday (October 18). Those who have not heard from the company should get in touch with them at 1-800-367-6372, or call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

The build* quality of these cars is quite poor. A friend has an S550 and had his acoustic windshield randomly crack 2x in the first 6 months. Of course it was covered by the Merc warranty and the service was excellent but how does that happen? He’s on his 3rd windshield in a year.

    edit: added ‘build’

Damn! these Mercs are so fast even the wings are flying off. Maybe they should’ve put wings on the doors instead lol. Prepare for liftoff.
