Chevrolet spent some significant time over at Nurburgring during the development of the C8 Corvette, during which it managed to set a lap time around the famous German track.
Speaking to Motor Authority, Corvette Lead Development Engineer Mike Petrucci confirmed that they made the run in July, one week before the July 18 reveal of the C8 Corvette at California.
The Nurburgring lap time was achieved with Corvette Racing driver Oliver Gavin sitting behind the wheel, with Petrucci not revealing what that time was, only saying that it exceeded the goals set by the development team.

Corvette PR manager Kevin Kelly was also asked when Chevrolet is going to release the lap time, saying that he doesn’t know yet but they will eventually announce it.
Switching to a mid-engine architecture can only prove beneficial for the Corvette’s handling, especially on a race track. Last time a Corvette was tested on the Nurburgring, it was the front-engined 750 HP C7 Corvette ZR1, which posted a 7:04 lap.
With that said, the current 495 HP C8 Corvette with the Z51 package isn’t expected to pose a threat at the 2019 ZR1’s time but the mid-engine chassis could have helped it go round the Nurburgring faster than the previous 650 HP C6 Corvette ZR1, which posted a 7:19.68.
The C8 Corvette is currently available to order only with a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter LT2 V8 engine that makes 495 HP (502 PS) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels of course via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
