Bertone’s Corvette-Based Mantide Is Looking For A New Home, Now Painted White

A car that some may remember fondly while others would rather choose to forget, the infamous Bertone Mantide, is currently up for sale from Autosport Designs in Long Island.

The Mantide came from the mind of well-known designer Jason Gastriota who helped design cars including the Ferrari 599 GTB, Maserati GranTurismo, Maserati Birdcage, and the Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina owned by James Glickenhaus. More recently, he designed the SSC Tuatara. The Mantide was not his finest work, to put it lightly.

Looking more like a Chinese knockoff than a vehicle from one of the planet’s most iconic design firms, the Bertone Mantide was based around the C6-generation Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. That meant it was powered by a supercharged V8 engine pumping out 638 hp and could allegedly reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.2 seconds and a 217 mph (351 km/h) top speed. Initial plans called for 10 units to be produced. Only one was ever made, perhaps due to the car’s hideous looks and the lack of millionaires wanting to own something so horrible.

Not long after the car completed its press tour at various events around the world, it came to the United States and was repainted Bianco Fuji. According to the listing, it has 10,000 miles (16,093 km) on the clock.

No asking price has been publicized for the car but we have a sneaking suspicion no matter how cheap or expensive the car may be, selling it could be quite a challenge.

“Perhaps due to the car’s hideous looks and the lack of millionaires wanting to own something so horrible”.

I appreciate it is certainly not a beautiful design, but can you at least try be objective when penning these articles, it sounds like you gave the job of writing this to some salty uneducated Discus commentator.

Also no mention of the year it was unveiled? At least give the design some context if you’re going to mercilessly bash it.

Not one of Bertone’s best. Poor ZR1 Corvette.

What I really want to see is more of that XJ220 in the back.

How much acid did Gastriota have to drop in order to come up with this vision?

Best place for this would be in the sink hole in the Corvette museum, before they fill it in!
