Volvo Wants To Be An All-Electric Brand By 2040

Volvo says it will become an all-electric car brand at some stage in the future, Autocar reports.

Fresh off the unveiling of the long-awaited electric Volvo XC40 Recharge, company boss Hakan Samuelsson told the British publication that the timing of Volvo’s transition to exclusively electric powertrains will depend on customer demand.

“It’s when [not if Volvo will become all-electric]. The ones who will decide [the timing] in the end are the customers,” he said. “The higher the percentage of all-electric cars the faster we will shut down the combustion engine [programme]. If only a small percent [of sales] are combustion engines we will probably stop faster.”

Volvo has a vision of becoming carbon neutral by 2040 and if it is to achieve that goal, it will have to stop producing combustion cars before then.

In the more immediate future, Volvo wants electric vehicles to account for half of its sales by 2025 and in the coming years, will introduce a selection of all-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids all of which will feature the new ‘Recharge’ badge to denote themselves as featuring electrified powertrains.

“We will address what we can control, which is both out operations and the tailpipe emissions of our cars. And we will address what we can influence, by calling on our suppliers and the energy sector to join us in aiming for a climate-neutral future,” Samuelsson recently said of the Swedish company’s pursuit to be carbon neutral.

All R&D done in Sweden. Two biggest factories in Gothenburg , Sweden and Ghent, Belgium, and both factories going full blast. New factory just opened in South Carolina, meaning more jobs for Americans and more American-made parts in Volvos.

  • Merc1

Might as well since your ICEs are crap and offer NO CHOICE in cylinder count.

    • HD

The new Volvos sell like hotcakes. Because nobody actually cares about cylinders.

      • Merc1

Well maybe Volvo customers don’t because Volvo has never really been an engine specialist. They’re also very good cars otherwise, but for people who want more, they’re lacking with that lawnmower engine setup they have now. To say “nobody” cares about cylinder count is just plain ignorant.

All Volvos are inferior archaic vehicles. We are nearing 2020 now. You people that still drive gasoline cars are completely clueless as to what superior technology exists in my driveway right now. Charging my car like my phone and my laptop. Anyone that buys a gas volvo is literally dumb

Whenever I think I’ve read the most smug, condescending, arrogant, ego-stroking nonsense imaginable, you remind us all that you’re still around stealing oxygen from the rest of us.

Why is that so funny? Isn’t this a good thing? Revamping for a new refresh or complete Redesign takes awhile and a lot of money to get done. Now imagine changing something as massive from one energy source to another going forward. Be thankfully there trying.

    • D3X

Not sure what’s so funny actually. 2040 is really for Volvo their main brand, which they may not go full EV for their entire lineup internationally. Most of their cars have some sort of electrification already with their T8, even though it’s not the most popular drivetrain.

However, maybe you haven’t heard of Polestar, especially their Polestar 2 that’s launching next year?

  • Since they switch to 4 pots only they don’t have any nice ICE powertrain nice to drive. So honestly I d’ont even care anymore. Only the T8 powertrain is some what fun to drive, but heavy as hell, bad noise, and drinks like a big fat V8 when you don’t drive in town…

  • Tostik

Is that why Volvo’s broken it’s sales record 3 years in a row?

  • Tostik

You’re such a big old meany.

  • Bo Hanan

I said it the way I meant it. It’s Ebonics and I bet you get it….
Additionally, Polestars have warmed over Volvo styling with a twist. Not exciting- yeah!
