Which Is The Best Off-Roader, The Mercedes-AMG G63, Suzuki Jimny, Or Jeep Wrangler?

The Mercedes-AMG G63, Suzuki Jimny, and Jeep Wrangler are all extremely capable off-road, but which is best when the going gets tough?

To see which of these three boxy off-roaders is the most well-rounded, Carwow pitted them against one another for a series of tests, scoring the trio depending on how they performed in each test to give the G63, Jimny, and Wrangler a final score.

In the first test, the trio line up for a drag race up a steep and slippery hill. Unsurprisingly, the G63 with its 577 HP, 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and three locking differentials wins. Impressively, the little Jimny beats out the Wrangler despite only featuring a tiny 1.5-liter four-cylinder with 101 HP and no locking differentials.

The second test assesses the maneuverability of the three before a third test, where each of the off-roaders were driven along an exceptionally steep bank to test out the articulation and strength of each chassis. Two of the other tests saw the trio crawl down a hill to see which has the best Hill-Descent Control system, while the final test saw each try to climb a rocky hill. Only the Jimny and G63 managed to complete that one…

Clearly, the G63, Jimny and Wrangler appeal to very different people and are far from direct rivals, particularly since they belong to distinct segments within the off-road vehicle market and are priced very differently. Nevertheless, it’s interesting to see how the three go about their business and are able to conquer some very difficult terrain.

That test was ridiculous. They tried to make the jeep lose all the way and still ended in a tie.

Considering the price, jimny is clear winner here…

For off roading I would still take the Jeep. For luxury I would take the G. If I couldn’t afford either I would take the Jimny. There’s no way I’m getting a Jimny if I could afford the Jeep.

      • brn

That’s a fair summary of where each vehicle stands out.

  • Paul

What a joke. They end up in a tie.

  • TheToadPrince.$€$

u gotta give respect to the jimmy..but id choose the Jeep…i wouldnt spend 100k for a car that can do the same as a jeep.

  • Ary Wisesa

I can see why the Jimny sells like hot cake here. Indent is already full for the next 4 years. Some dealers marks the price up to 2x times of its offical MSRP.

I hope they make the LWB variant (5-doors) of this cute little offroader.

  • Bash

They have to end up in a tie. besides at the end it all about how much you can pay and what you can afford. Personally I’d still take the Jeep. but the fact that putting a Jimny among these other two off-roader-pillars is really respectable; you can’t but to adore and desire the Jimny even more.

  • Six_Tymes

the hill climb was BS. he started and hardly gave the jeep gas until too late. thus, hardly any momentum

    • Emoto

Yeah, the “Steep hill” test put the reviewer’s poor driving skills on display. I have driven up steeper and worse in my bone stock Rubicon.

  • brightside

There is nothing to compare about. All three vehicles have very different specs. Comparing apples and oranges. What a waste.

  • Cevair Zufer

    Pointless!

  • SteersUright

I guess each of these is about as good as their respective price tags suggest. Id take the Gwagon in a heartbeat were money no object except that, well, money is always an object.

  • Krisnadi Imam

the jimny is 90% the performance at the fraction of the price of the other two… i wont cry as much when it got banged up or outright stolen…

  • onthetrack

It’ll be interesting to see how the newly rumored LR Defender SVR/X will compare to these. I’d imagine quite good.

  • Jeep Rubicon

Someone needs to learn how to drive a jeep. That Rubicon would kill both those vehicles on a real trail.
