2021 BMW M5 Facelift Spied Right Next To Current Model: Can You Tell The Differences?

It’s not often that we get the chance to see manufacturers park their future products right next to their current offerings, as is the case here with the facelifted 2021 BMW M5 at the brand’s M Testcenter near the Nurburgring. See all the new pictures from our spies in the gallery below. [Updated 11/26/2019]

BMW is in the midst of developing and testing a facelifted version of the all-conquering M5 sedan.

It hasn’t been very long since the current 5-Series and M5 models reached the market so the updates made to the facelifted model, or the ‘Life Cycle Improvement’ (LCI) as BMW likes to say, will only be minor, as you can see for yourself by these latest images of the camo’d 2021MY parked right next to the current version.

The front of the prototypes pictured can be seen outfitted with tweaked headlights that include new LED daytime running lights. In addition, BMW appears to have altered the super sedan’s front grille while also reshaping parts of the bumper. No alterations will be made to the sides of the 2021 M5 although there will be some tweaks found at the rear. These will include new taillights with distinctive LED graphics and a different bumper.

Driving the facelifted BMW M5 will be the company’s familiar 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine delivering no less than 617 hp in Competition guise. BMW’s engineers may be able to extract some additional horsepower and torque from this engine to make it a touch more accelerative than the current model.

As if that wasn’t enough to get you excited, some reports assert that BMW is working on a new twin-turbo V8 based around the S63 unit used by the current M5. It is possible that this engine could displace 4.0-liters or less and be paired with a plug-in hybrid or mild-hybrid 48-volt system to deliver even more than the M5 Competition. This model could be dubbed the BMW M5 CS and may arrive in about three years’ time.
