Resistance Is Futile: Mercedes-Benz Confirms It’ll Build An Electric G-Class!

As if getting a true all-new model in nearly four decades wasn’t enough, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is now entering the realm of electrification.

This is not a rumor, but an actual confirmation that came from none other than Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius, who was quoted by the company’s chief of Digital Transformation, Sascha Pallenberg, in a short Tweet.

The electric variant of the new G-Wagen will be part of Mercedes-Benz’s EQ sub-brand. Kallenius has already confirmed a massive €10 billion ($11 billion) investment in the EQ portfolio, followed by the following statement: “By 2022, we will be bringing more than ten different all-electric vehicles to market.”

At least one battery-powered Mercedes-Benz G-Class exists, though it’s not an official version but rather a conversion by an Austrian company named Kreisel Electric. Owned by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who took delivery almost three years ago, it has a 490 PS (483 HP/ 360 kW) electric motor, does the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 5.6 seconds and maxes out at 183 km/h (114 mph). Power comes from an 80 kWh battery pack, which supports 150 kW fast-charging and gives it a range of 300+ km (190 miles).

On a related note, at some point Mercedes-Benz thought about killing the G-Class altogether, but its execs quickly changed their minds.

“In the past, there were discussions whether we should eliminate the model, the way I see things now, I’d say the last Mercedes to be built will be a G-Class”, added Kallenius as quoted, again, by Pallenberg.

Resistance? Its the trend, have we not been paying attention? Many people buy EVs for different reason. Some to be trendy and adopt an alternative powertrain, others that would like to cut down on their direct emissions and some that like the characteristics of EVs (quiet interior, instant torque, etc).

Of course there are others who oppose EVs for multiple reasons. Some live in climates that have cold seasonal weather which significantly lowers battery range. Others don’t want to wait 10-15mins to “fuel up”. And some cite the indirect pollution and toxicity of their batteries once disposed. Those in the used market are worried about battery degradation that may not be as pronounced with combustion engines.

Like with any technology, there will be those that want what’s new and others that feel comfortable with what is known to work. Rarely does any new technology improve on every facet of what people use technology for. There will always be a trade off.

thank God cuz I’m still not rich enough to afford a G-class and I don’t care if its electric or petrol, I just want one!

And even more lipstick on this pig…

I like how everyone is pretending that G class is not a universal status symbol for all criminals around the world.

    • GreenApple18r

I like how you’re pretending as if that is a valid excuse for not being able to afford a G-Class or even true. Grow up kiddo. You’re only embarrassing yourself.

      • ace_9

Did I wrote something about affordability? How old are you that you’re calling me a kid?

        • GreenApple18r

write* Any 4 or 5 door vehicle in that price range is loved by big time criminals and gangs. You made a degrading comment about an expensive product and its customers and you did it poorly. It’s what people do when they’re jealous and can’t help themselves.

I think that you’re blind to many points of view (not only about G-class or cars) because you focus on money too much.
