New Morgan Models Coming In 2020 Based On CX-Generation Aluminum Platform

Morgan has confirmed plans to launch a host of new models in 2020, all of them based on its new CX-Generation aluminum platform that debuted in the all-new Plus Six earlier this year.

This is big news for the British sports car manufacturer, as it marks the end of production for the traditional steel chassis which traces its lineage back to 1936. Amazingly, it’s still used by current models, including the Morgan 4/4, Plus 4, and V6 Roadster.

Morgan is currently developing the all-new CX-Generation models that will replace existing cars built on its old steel chassis. Designed in house by Morgan, the CX-Generation platform is twice as rigid as the previous aluminum chassis which underpinned the Aero 8 and second-generation Plus 8 models.

Thanks to weight-reducing measures, the new platform tips the scales at just 97 kg (214 lbs) and is essential to the Plus Six’s remarkably low dry weight of 1,075 kg (2,370 lbs). For the moment, Morgan is keeping the cards close to its chest when it comes to the new models launching next year.

However, the automaker does say that the range will include a variant with a manual gearbox, as well as a smaller engine than the BMW-sourced 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six used in the Plus Six.

While the automaker has not confirmed an official end date for production of the traditional steel chassis models, it did say that they will be produced alongside CX-Generation cars for a while before being discontinued sometime in 2020.

The new car introductions will take place in 2020 and form a core range of models for the British manufacturer. The company is hoping the new CX-Generation models will follow in the footsteps of the Plus Six, which has received positive reactions from both the media and customers. Morgan, which is controlled by the Italian investment group InvestIndustrial, will release more information on the new model range and launch dates in 2020.
