Last year’s BMW Concept 4 previewed the German marque’s newly-designed front kidney grilles which will first debut with the new M3 and M4, as well as the regular 4-Series Coupe, before being tweaked and applied to the all-electric BMW i4.
While the recently facelifted BMW 5-Series and 6-Series Gran Turismo have escaped this buck tooth-style grille, we do expect other BMW models to adopt the enlarged grille in the coming years, and this could include the next-generation X5. YouTuber TheSketchMonkey recently went to work to see just what a new X5 could look like with a grille like the one on the Concept 4.

By fitting these new grilles, the designer has also completely overhauled the entire front end of the SUV. That means the lower grille and air intakes have been re-modeled and look vastly different than the current model. While the design work done is very impressive, we think BMW would be making a mistake if it goes down a similar design route with the next X5, whenever it may hit the market (probably somewhere around the middle of the decade).
Not all hope is lost with BMW’s current design language, however. One thing we do like are the thinner and more angular headlights that have been featured on a number of the carmaker’s recent concepts, as well as the new 5-Series. While they may not be as characterful as the headlights currently used by the X5, they give the SUV an extra sporty look that we think looks very nice.
