Earlier this week, BMW officially introduced us to the lightly refreshed for the 2021 model year, M5 super sedan. And as usual, every time we get a new M5, the internet ponders if BMW should build a rival to the Audi RS6 Avant and Mercedes-AMG E63 Estate.
Unfortunately, that is not going to happen, as the Bavarian automaker hasn’t offered such a car since the V10-powered E60/E61 generation, though there have been several attempts from petrol heads over the years to turn regular 5-Series Touring models into unofficial M5 wagons.

Still, if you’re wondering what an F90-based M5 station wagon could look like, enter the digital world of XTomi Design. The illustration portrays the obvious: a 2021 M5 with a long roof and more space behind the rear seats, as everything else stays true to the real super sedan, including the oh-so lightly restyled face and new wheels. Seeing it here, we can’t say we’re missing out on much compared to the aggressive Audi RS6 Avant or the more elegant Mercedes-AMG E63, which was just presented in facelifted form.

The 2021 M5 will launch in regular and Competition variants this summer, with pricing starting at $103,500 for the former and $111,100 for the latter, excluding a $995 destination charge.

Like the outgoing model, the standard version comes with 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 592 HP (600 PS / 441 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque, directed to both axles through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The M5 Competition features the same rear-biased all-wheel drive system, tuned by the M division, but the V8 delivers 616 HP (625 PS / 460 kW). The more agile version does the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.3 seconds, or 0.1 second faster than the standard M5.
