Maserati has just dropped another piece of the MC20 puzzle, and this time it’s the engine that gets some attention.

The heart of the Italian super sports car is a 3.0-liter V6 with twin turbochargers, developed using technological features derived from Formula 1. Tipping the scales at under 485 lbs (220 kg), it pumps out 621 HP (629 PS / 463 kW) at 7,500 rpm and 538 lb-ft (730 Nm) of torque from 3,000 to 5,500 rpm, and can be revved up to 8,000 rpm.

The new power plant has a pre-chamber combustion system with twin-spark plugs, a first for an engine destined for the road. Set between the classic combustion chamber and central electrode, and connected by several specially designed holes, the pre-chamber is joined by the lateral spark plug, which uses a traditional spark plug to support the combustion when operating at low levels.

The twin injection system, direct and indirect, helps reduce the noise low down on the rev range, while also improving the fuel consumption and lowering the CO2 emissions. Designed at the company’s Modena facilities and developed at the Engine Hub, where it will also be built, the new engine is “protected by international patents” and will power other future models made by the Trident brand, besides the MC20.

The MC20 will celebrate its world premiere at the ‘MMXX: The Time To Be Audacious’ event that will take place in Modena, on September 9 and 10. The sports car will also take Maserati back to the world of racing.

“At the launch, new models will be revealed, which will go into production in the coming years, and innovative propulsion systems as well as ambitious programs developed by the Casa del Tridente will be announced”, the company said.
