A man has been taken into custody after leading police on a high-speed chase near Santa Cruz, California and spearing off a cliff and into the Pacific Ocean.

The bizarre series of events started at roughly 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon when deputies responded to reports of a man firing a handgun in a restaurant near the town of Davenport. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office believes the man then carjacked a vehicle and took off.

“We heard an officer interviewing a lady in the restaurant about her car being stolen at gunpoint and another patron said that guy fired shots into the air,” a witness told KPIX 5.

CNN reports that the suspect fled the scene at speeds exceeding 100 mph (160 km/h) and while police initially gave chase, they terminated the pursuit as the suspect reached Santa Cruz. Authorities soon saw the man traveling at high speed alongside West Cliff Drive, a coastal road above the Pacific Ocean, before the suspect drove over a cliff and into the waters below.

In a statement, police said the man was arrested shortly after the crash.

“The suspect was safely taken into custody after climbing out of the stolen vehicle, as he stumbled up the rocky shoreline,” the department said.

No injuries have been reported although the suspect’s name has not yet been made public.

Footage captured by Twitter user Kyle Gzsanka in the wake of the crash shows the man’s silver car floating in the water before being hit by ferocious waves. The suspect can then be seen climbing up the rocks.
