According to most, if not all, reports, the new generation Volkswagen Golf R that was teased on Friday ahead of its world premiere next week will launch exclusively with a dual-clutch automatic transmission (DSG).
One Youtuber who spied a prototype of the new Mk8 Golf R begs to differ, claiming that the test car on the Nurburgring was sporting a manual gearbox.
Due to the background noise, it is very difficult to hear the actual gear changes, so we’re unable to verify that claim. Besides, a Golf R with a manual ‘box would be a surprise move on VW’s part, as its predecessor was available solely with the DSG.
Moreover, in the off chance that VW is indeed testing the Golf R with a manual, there is no indication that they will go ahead with it – after all, at some point, they also tested Audi Sport’s 2.5-liter five-pot, only to eventually abandon this project.

In all likelihood, the Golf R will use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which will reportedly put out 328 HP (333 PS / 245 kW). The Haldex-based all-wheel drive system will, of course, be standard, providing better traction than the front-wheel drive GTI.
Besides the unique powertrain configuration and suspension set-up, the 2021 Golf R will set itself apart from lesser variants thanks to a distinctive front end with a unique grille and larger air intakes, as well as a bigger roof-mounted wing, more aggressive-looking diffuser, quad tailpipes, special wheels and R branding.
As for the cabin, expect exclusive upholstery options, seats with extra bolstering and dedicated menus for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system.
The all-new Golf R is only a few days away from its premiere, as VW will unveil it next Wednesday, on November 4. As for the Golf R Variant wagon, it will likely arrive early next year.
