2022 VW ID.6 Electric Crossover Ain’t Fooling Us With That Funny Peugeot-like Camo

The Volkswagen ID.6 electric crossover-estate has been spied testing yet again, this time in the frozen north, still wearing that dubious Peugeot 5008 front-end camo to distract our spy shooters. We still expect it to be introduced towards the end of next year. [Updated 12/21/2020]

The trick-camouflage made it difficult to identify some of the design details, especially up front, but we can see the overall proportions of the model, which looks more like a jacked-up estate rather than a true high-rider, but that’s a different story. In all likelihood, it will be inspired by the smaller ID.4, with similar styled front and rear ends.

The cockpit has yet to open up to the camera, but we can expect a simple layout, with very few buttons. It should also sport the latest digital gauges and infotainment software and a host of driver assistance features, alongside some sort of semi-autonomous capabilities. The ID.6 will feature more premium quality materials inside than the ID.4.

Underpinned by the MEB platform, which is the foundation stone for almost all the upcoming electric vehicles made under the Volkswagen Group’s roof, the ID.6 will offer more room than any other ID-badged model to date. The ID Roomzz Concept, which previewed by the ID.6 last year, boasting more interior space than the Touareg, featured an 82 kWh battery pack that powered two electric motors.

The show car had a total system output of 302 HP, requiring 6.6 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill, and could top out at 112 mph (180 km/h). The battery supported 150 kW fast charging and gave the show car a 279-mile (450 km) driving range on the WLTP cycle.

There will also be a traditional sedan version of the ID.6 that will be launch in the third quarter of 2023. The four-door model was previewed in a rather dramatic (and, obviously, unrealistic) way through the I.D. Vizzion Concept all the way back in 2018 at the Geneva Motor Show. The production ID.6 sedan (while the two will share the same underpinnings, it’s unknown if VW will use the ID.6 moniker on both) will have a more conventional appearance akin to the SUV model featured in the spy photos.
