The Ford Mustang Mach-E has been earning a lot of positive press lately. It’s well made, has great range, and might actually be fun to drive. But can it compete against the coolest EV brand, Tesla?
TFL decided to put the Mach-E up against the Model Y to find out if the Ford can compete on Tesla’s turf.
The results, for anyone who’s been paying attention, aren’t all that shocking. The Tesla gets points for its features and battery tech, but get dinged for its poor build quality.

The Mustang Mach-E, meanwhile, is again broadly praised. Ford has wisely spent time ensuring that it has cool features like a frunk that can be used as a cooler. But it has spent more time focusing on making an EV that lives up to build-quality standards expected by customers at this day and age.
In fact, the very Model Y the TFL crew test has body panels that overlap, causing them to snap together and apart when the trunk opens and closes. It is, of course, still too soon to know exactly how reliable the Mach-E will be, but early reports indicate that its bumpers will remain firmly affixed in everyday use and not fall apart in the rain.
But Tesla still offers great range and a better charging infrastructure, and that really matters. It’s all well and good to be able to drive 300 miles, but if the nearest station is nowhere near by, that will be deeply irritating in real world use.
In the end, TFL concludes that the Ford may be a better car, but the Tesla might still be the better EV. Even so, Ford has produced a real competitor.
