The Volkswagen ID.4 is the model that will introduce the German brand’s electric vehicles to North America. However, based on this review from Engineering Explained, a few issues need to be ironed out before the SUV can be considered a proper rival to the likes of the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Driving the ID.4 is a rear-mounted electric motor with 201 hp and 228 lb-ft (309 Nm) of torque. In Pro guise, the SUV features an 82 kWh battery pack and is able to travel 250 miles (403 km) on a single charge according to the EPA. That beats out the rear-wheel drive Ford Mustang Mach-E Standard Range that can travel 230 miles (370 km) on a charge.

As Jason from Engineering Explained reveals in his interview, the VW ID.4 also has the Mustang Mach-E beat when it comes to fast charging. When hooked up to an Electrify America charger, he was able to top up the battery from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just 35 minutes. A charge from 15 per cent to 65 per cent took a mere 22 minutes, just 1 minute slower than the YouTuber’s own Tesla Model 3.

The ID.4 does have a number of issues, though. For example, the navigation system does not prioritize Electrify America chargers and can often send you to slow chargers. Additionally, it is very heavy at 4,665 lbs and doesn’t feature a heat pump nor a front trunk, while VW also hasn’t equipped the ID.4 with a one-pedal driving function.
