The Volkswagen ID.5 will be introduced in the second half of this year and spy photographers have caught the model undergoing some final testing.

Snapped wearing a half-hearted Kia disguise, the ID.5 follows in the footsteps of the ID.4 but is a slightly more fashionable crossover coupe.

The changes are apparent when viewed from the side as the ID.5 adopts a sleeker roof and more dynamic rear pillars. Designers also gave the model a trunk-like liftgate with a prominent spoiler.

Spy photographers didn’t get close enough to grab interior pictures, but the cabin should largely carryover from the ID.4. This means we can expect a 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster as well as a 10- or 12-inch infotainment system.

Powertrains should carryover as well and this means we can expect battery packs with a net capacity of 52 and 77 kWh. They’ll likely power a rear electric motor with outputs of 146 hp (109 kW / 148 PS) and 162 lb-ft (220 Nm), 168 hp (125 kW / 170 PS) and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm) as well as 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm) of torque. A performance-oriented GTX variant, with all-wheel drive, should also be part of the lineup.

While specifications remain unconfirmed, the ID.4 offers a WLTP range of up 522 km (324 miles) with the larger battery park. The crossover can also accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 8.5 seconds.

Volkswagen officials have suggested the ID.5 will be exclusive to Europe, but they seemed to leave the door open to wider sales later on. Of course, we’ll likely hear more about that possibility later this year.
