British Formula 1 driver Lando Norris will continue with the team that brought him into the series for the foreseeable future. Lando Norris and McLaren announced a multi-year deal today that would see the young driver continue racing with the team until at least 2023.

“My commitment to McLaren is clear: my goal is to win races and become Formula 1 World Champion and I want to do that with this team,” said Norris in a statement. “Since joining in 2017 our progression has been consistent and we have clear ambitions together for the future.”

The announcement means that McLaren’s driver lineup is decided in the near term. Both Norris and his teammate, Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo, have multi-year deals with the team which will see them shepherd it into Formula 1’s next generation.

Rule changes will see the sport’s cars change drastically in 2022. The changes are seen as an opportunity for teams to improve their lot and could lead to a reordering of the championship standings.

Lando has impressed us since his rookie year with his performances, and his evolution as a driver since then has been clear to see,” said Andreas Seidl, McLaren F1 Team Principal. “In Lando and Daniel we have a hugely talented and exciting driver line-up, and this announcement is a strong signal of commitment to the next chapter for McLaren from 2022 onwards.”

Norris has emerged as one of Formula 1’s most beloved drivers thanks to his bonhomie and his popularity on Twitter and Twitch. His performances last season and early this season have also marked him out as one of the sport’s young talents. With two podiums to his name already, and McLaren’s improving cars, the combination could be a potent one.

“I want to say thank you to Zak [Brown, McLaren Racing CEO] and Andreas [Seidl] for the belief they’ve shown in me since the beginning, and to the whole team for giving me such a strong environment to continue my career in,” said Norris. “We’ve already had some incredible moments together which I’ll never forget – two podiums and securing P3 in the championship – and together with Daniel and the rest of the team I’m looking forward to pushing for even more success in the years to come.”
