Like Americans, Europeans are enamored with SUVs but across the pond, there’s still plenty of love left for station wagons that often prove more popular than their sedan counterparts. With Genesis having taken its European assault seriously, the Koreans have presented their very first estate model under the ‘Shooting Brake’ moniker based on the new G70 compact luxury sedan.

Designed with European customers in mind (sorry America), the G70 Shooting Brake will be the fifth model Genesis has confirmed for its market launch in the continent this summer, after the G70 and G80 sedans, and the GV70 and GV80 SUVs.

With the Audi A4 Avant, BMW 3-Series Touring and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate in its sights, the 2021 G70 Shooting Brake has identical dimensions to the sedan. It is 4,685 mm (184.4 in) long, 1,850 mm (72.8 in) wide and 1,400 mm (55.1 in) tall, and has a 2,835 mm (111.6 in) long wheelbase. The redesigned rear end and the longer roof have opened up more boot space, with the automaker claiming that the luggage area is 40 percent larger than that of the sedan. Moreover, owners will be able to haul some big items thanks to the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats.

Up front, it is indistinguishable from the G70 Sedan, featuring the same bumper design, grille and split headlamp styling. The slim LED taillights have identical graphics, but they now protrude into the tailgate that otherwise still displays the ‘Genesis’ name in the middle, right above the model’s nomenclature and designation. The bumper has been adapted to the Shooting Brake styling and ends with a four-fin diffuser, just like on the four-door body style. It also sports a roof-mounted spoiler that incorporates the third brake light.

As expected, the interior carries over and includes the free-standing infotainment system, HVAC controls, center console, buttons surrounding the gear selector, cup holders and three-spoke multi-function steering wheel, among others.

Genesis has yet to detail the trim levels and powertrains of the G70 Shooting Brake, yet they should mirror the saloon which is offered with a 249 HP 2.0-liter turbo-four and a 365 HP twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6, as well as a 2.2-liter diesel making 199 HP.
