GMC is getting an early start to the holiday weekend by releasing a video of a Hummer EV prototype using its launch control mode, known as “Watts to Freedom.”

Watts to Freedom comes standard on the Edition 1 version of the pickup and it makes the most of the model’s tri-motor powertrain that produces up to 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS).

When drivers select the mode, the interior conveys the feeling of a “pre-launch countdown” through a series of experiences that include interactive controls, onscreen animations and unique sounds that are played on the Bose audio system. As this is happening, the air suspension automatically lowers the vehicle by 2 inches (51 mm) to reduce its center of gravity.

Drivers are then instructed to release the brake pedal to launch the vehicle and then it’s blast off. The latter is an apt term as the truck is slated to rocket from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in approximately three seconds.

According to GMC Hummer EV chief engineer Al Oppenheiser, “Watts to Freedom unlocks the full potential of the propulsion system and puts all of its available power to the pavement.” He added, “It’s an all-encompassing experience unlike anything else – purpose-built for straight-line fun.”

The Hummer EV is set to be launched this fall in an exclusive Edition 1 trim that costs $112,595. Despite its six-figure price tag, all the reservations were spoken for within a matter of minutes. However, a slightly more affordable 3X variant will arrive in the fall of 2022 for $99,995.

Unfortunately, the lower price tag is accompanied by a less extreme powertrain that produces up to 830 hp (619 kW / 842 PS) and has a range of 300+ miles (483+ km). That being said, customers will be able to upgrade to the same powertrain as the Edition 1, which has a range of 350+ miles (563+ km) as well as an output of up to 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS).

More affordable variants will follow in the spring of 2023 and 2024, while a Hummer EV SUV will arrive in early 2023 with a base price of $105,595.
