Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly common and with the ongoing EV boom, car manufacturers are looking to eke out as much range as possible from their new models. BMW, however, it doesn’t plan on producing EVs that have a range greater than 393 miles (600 km).

While recently speaking with Australia’s Which Car, BMW i4 project leader David Ferrufino said the development of charging infrastructure around the world means BMW doesn’t need to make EVs with extraordinary long ranges to rival vehicles like the Lucid Air.

“One thousand kilometers of range is not a target we have with our fully-electric cars,” Ferrufino said. “We are aiming for 600 kilometers [of driving range] for our fully-electric cars, and 100 kilometers with our plug-in hybrids in everyday driving.”

Ferrufino added that the range BMW gives an EV is dependent on the segment that it competes in.

“For example, we don’t think a range of 600 kilometres will be suitable for a BMW i3 as an urban car, but when it comes to the BMW iX or i4, we think that around 600 kilometres is a very customer-friendly solution.”

The 2022 BMW i4 can travel up to 590 km (367 miles) on a single charge and when plugged into a 200 kW DC fast charger, its battery can be topped up from 10 to 80 per cent in 31 minutes.

“We not only have the advancements in battery technology, we also have the public charging network – which is growing rapidly. Going cross-country in Europe from Norway to Italy is already a joyful experience when you do it in an electric car,” Ferrufino added.
