Among all the Stellantis brands in North America, Chrysler is probably the brand that most urgently needs a new model since it has been left with the aging 300 and the Pacifica. While it has been confirmed that no new model launches are expected in 2022 and in 2023, the group’s big plans for the brand include a fully electric crossover that is rumored for 2024.

The Chrysler EV Concept introduced in July, alongside Stellantis’ roadmap, is a preview of the brand’s upcoming Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y rival.

During the 2021 Software Day, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said that the Chrysler EV Concept introduced in July was more than just a concept. This could mean that a production version is not far into the future, with Car and Driver reporting a possible 2024 reveal. It is possible for this model to bring back the Airflow nameplate since U.S. trademarks were filed in 2019 and 2021.

The Airflow EV would be quite an important launch for Chrysler as its first new model after several years. Benefiting from Stellantis’ parts bin, it is expected to showcase the latest technological advancements in terms of electric powertrains, ADAS, and infotainment/connectivity features.

Despite the initial reports that the crossover could be underpinned by the STLA Large platform, Car and Driver believes that it will sit on the STLA Medium platform designed to underpin premium vehicles in the C and D segments. According to the official preview of the architecture, it will allow an electric range of up to 440 miles (700 km) thanks to battery packs with a capacity between 87-104 kWh. As for the power output, we know that the STLA Medium will be compatible with both the smaller 168-242 hp (125-180 kW / 170-245 PS) e-motors and the larger 201-443 hp (150-330 kW / 204-449 PS) units. A dual-electric motor setup with AWD would probably be the most fitting option for this type of vehicle.

Buyers of EV crossovers are drawn into infotainment and connectivity features so the new Chrysler is expected to feature tech at least on par with the competition. The concept came with a huge infotainment screen flanked by four other displays at the front and two more at the back, although we’ll have to wait and see if the exact same setup makes it into production. Premium materials, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof complete the picture for a luxurious atmosphere in the five-seater cabin.

While it is too early to speculate, the Airflow EV sounds exactly like the type of vehicle that Chrysler needs in order to move into the future. We hope that Stellantis delivers on its promises and helps Chrysler make a strong comeback.
