Over the last couple of years, Jacob & Co and Bugatti have teamed up to create a handful of unique timepieces inspired by the Chiron – and this is their latest creation.

Dubbed the Bugatti Chiron Blue Sapphire Crystal, the timepiece has many of the same features as the other tourbillon watches from the pair. As such, it features a fully-functional replica of the Chiron’s 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine where the pistons actually move and the turbochargers spin.

Separating this timepiece from the others is the fact that the case is made completely out of sapphire crystal that took several months of materials processing, high-level machinery, and hand polishing to create. The sapphire was then tinted in a shade of blue.

Viewed from the rear, the Bugatti Chiron Blue Sapphire Crystal shows some of the 578 hand-decorated and hand-assembled components that make up the mechanism. Many of the 51 jewels used in the watch are also visible from the back. Other striking details of the timepiece include a power reserve inspired by the Chiron’s fuel gauge and three sapphire crowns.

Elsewhere, the watch includes Jacob & Co’s ‘Shock Protection System’, 18-karat rose gold accents, a rubber strap, and an 18-karat rose gold buckle. Just one unit has been created and it took a single craftsman roughly 120 hours to complete the case alone. The price? A cool $1.5 million.

As mentioned, a number of other tourbillon timepieces are available from Bugatti and Jacob & Co. These include ones with a case finished in rose gold, rose gold with diamonds, white gold, and clear sapphire. A ‘regular’ version timepiece without all the fancy jewels is also available for $280,000.
