We’re getting closer to discovering the 2022 World Car of the Year as organizers have announced the top ten finalists for the title category.

Four electric vehicles are among the contenders as the Audi Q4 e-tron, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Kia EV6 will be fighting for top honors. However, it won’t be a cakewalk as they’ll have to battle the Cupra Formentor, Genesis G70, and Toyota GR86 / Subaru BRZ. Also in contention are the Honda Civic, Hyundai Tucson, and Lexus NX.

Speaking of electric vehicles, they’ve been given their own category this year. As a result, the Audi e-tron GT, BMW iX, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Mercedes EQS will be battling to take home the title of World Electric Vehicle of the Year.

On the luxury side of the equation, the Audi Q5 Sportback, BMW iX, Genesis GV70, Mercedes EQS, and Volvo C40 Recharge will fight to be named 2022 World Luxury Car. Likewise, the Audi e-tron GT, BMW M3 / M4, Porsche 911 GT3, Toyota GR86 / Subaru BRZ, and Volkswagen Golf GTI / R will battle to become World Performance Car.

Interestingly, the 2022 World Urban Car isn’t very worldly as none of the finalists are sold in the United States. That being said, contenders include the Dacia Sandero, Opel Mokka, Renault Kiger, Toyota Yaris Cross, and Volkswagen Taigun.

All of the aforementioned models are also eligible to win the title of 2022 World Car Design of the Year. However, a panel of “six highly respected world design experts” have created a shortlist that includes the Audi e-tron GT, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Mercedes EQS.

The top three finalists will be announced on March 15th, before the winners are revealed at the New York Auto Show on April 13th.
