Here’s A Ridiculously Powerful Porsche Track Toy For Those Who Want To Flirt With Danger

First introduced by Porsche in late 1996, the 986 Boxster is nowadays a bargain as you can find a used example at a very affordable price. This 2000 Boxster, however, is a different beast altogether thanks to more than 600-horsepower and just about all of the racing equipment you could ever want.

Up for sale through Bavaria Motors online, the listing calls this a 968 prototype without any specifics as to exactly how it came to be that way. What it does tell us is that originally this was a normal 986 Boxster that essentially all of its body removed and replaced with a mix of panels made from kevlar and carbon fiber.

The lightest factory-made 986 weighed in around 1,250 kg or 2,756 pounds. This car tips the scales at just 980 kg or 2,160 pounds. That’s a saving equivalent to removing the entire weight of the average adult male grizzly bear from the car. The builder wasn’t done there though.

In fact, they dropped a 3.6-liter flat-six under the rear decklid which churns out 625 hp (459 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 nm) of torque. That gives it a power-to-weight ratio of 0.29-horsepower per pound. To put that in perspective, the Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 has a power-to-weight ratio of 0.25-horsepower per pound.

This little rocket has the kit to back up that kind of raucous power too. A Bosh Motorsport racing ABS helps bring the car to a stop with AP brakes in the front in addition to Brembo brakes in the rear and it rolls around the track on 18-inch FIKSE wheels. A totally custom coolant system has been constructed to keep the car from overheating while a towering rear wing is meant to provide the much needed downforce.

There are a lot of fun cars to buy for $163,826 (149,900 Euros), which is this extremely modified Boxster’s asking price, but if you’ve been itching for the champagne taste of something like an Essenza SCV12 but are on a beer budget, this might be the best way to go about fulfilling those dreams.
