Ford Dealers Marking Up Used Mavericks Like They’re Better Than New

Something interesting is going on in the Ford Maverick used pickup truck market. Normally, the used market is the place buyers can go to get a little bit better deal than having to buy brand new. While both new and used cars are more expensive than ever, used vehicles have still been providing buyers with a lower barrier to entry. So we’re wondering why many Ford dealers are pricing used Mavericks many thousands of dollars above their original MSRP when new.

It’s not unusual for dealers to mark up brand new vehicles. We’ve covered that many times in the past and it’s not reserved for any one brand. Chevrolet dealers, Volkswagen dealers, Nissan dealers, and more have all been outed for greedy markup practices that damage brand image. We’ve even covered strange Ford dealer markups on the F-150 Lightning and had the brand itself respond to remedy the situation. It would be interesting to find out what the Blue Oval brand thinks of the trucks we’ve found below.

After a cursory search, we’ve found a number of Mavericks, including every trim level, with these markups and we’ve documented just four of the many here with both screen grabs of the dealer website along with the actual window sticker. To begin, let’s talk about the smallest markup over MSRP in this group.

Imperial Ford in Mendon, MA, is selling a Maverick Lariat with a “Sticker Price” of $57,647 before a generous $6,000 “Savings” discount leaving the asking price at $51,647. Of course, that feels a bit less generous once you realize that this used pickup truck has 1,675 miles and an original MSRP of $38,115. For those who don’t want to do the math, that’s a $13,532 markup.

Wayne Akers Ford of Lake Worth, FL has a Maverick XLT with 2,257 miles, which they eagerly point out is below market average, on sale for $49,995. That’s no less than $19,535 above its original MSRP when new of $30,460. And somehow that’s not the highest markup we’ve found.

That prize goes to the folks over at Manteca Ford in California where they have the cheapest Maverick that we’ll talk about here. It’s an XL trim, which is the base for the lineup, and its MSRP when new was $24,930. Ford intended on the Maverick being a good value and this one would be too if it wasn’t marked up by $21,058 to a grand total of $45,988.

For that kind of extra cash, buyers could go get a new F-150 or just cross-shop the Hyundai Santa Cruz and save themselves literally tens of thousands of dollars. We’ll update this story if we hear any more from Ford or these dealers.
