Alfa Romeo is going all-in on EVs, but we shouldn’t expect them to look radically different than today’s models.

That’s the message from Alfa Romeo’s Head of Design, who told Top Gear “Looking electric for the sake of it doesn’t make sense from my point of view.”

Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos went on to say, “Electrification changes the way the car moves, but the character, the style, the values will remain” the same. He added the only thing that will change is the powertrain and to him, it’s more important that upcoming models be true Alfa Romeos.

While early electric vehicles strove to be different, Mesonero-Romanos noted “Everyone is, or will be, electric, so there is no need to say, ‘hey, hello, I’m electric, look at me.’” He’s got a point and some automakers have already been introducing electric vehicles that look similar to their ICE-powered counterparts.

That being said, Mesonero-Romanos hinted future electric vehicles will have shorter overhangs, longer wheelbases, and different proportions. We also wouldn’t be surprised to see a fully enclosed take on Alfa Romeo’s iconic grille.

Regardless of what the future holds, the designer said Alfa Romeos should have a “bold stance” with an “assertive expression” and a “visual power.” In effect, he wants future models to have a “wow” factor that provokes love or hate reactions as being indifferent is boring.

That sounds promising, although seeing is believing and we’re still perplexed by the similarities between the Alfa Romeo Tonale and the upcoming Dodge Hornet.
