Seventh-Gen Ford Mustang GT Unveiled For Australia’s Supercars Championship

The new Ford Mustang GT Supercar, based around the seventh-generation model and created for Australia’s Supercars series, has been unveiled at the famed Bathurst 1000 endurance race.

The Mustang Supercar has been brought to life by Ford Performance and Dick Johnson Racing and will make its competitive debut at the start of the 2023 season as part of the new ‘Gen3’ regulations. It will be raced by Dick Johnson Racing, Tickford Racing, Grove Racing, Blanchard Racing Team, and Walkinshaw Andretti United in the championship.

While key technical specifications about the race car remain under wraps, we know that it is more closely aligned with its road-going sibling than previous iterations built for the series. In fact, it is powered by a production-based Coyote V8, albeit one that has been upgraded to deliver in excess of 600 hp.

“It is fantastic to be able to show, for the very first time globally, the seventh-generation Mustang in racing form,” Ford Performance Motorsports global director Mark Rushbrook said. “The reveal of the Mustang Supercar is the first of many, with Mustang to race in GT3, GT4, NASCAR and NHRA competition globally. Mustang has been an iconic brand on and off the track for 58 years and its legend will continue around the world. We always say Mustang was born to race, and that is more true today than ever. The Mustang GT Supercar is ready to race in 2023.”

Some dramatic aerodynamic upgrades have been made to the Mustang to get it ready to go racing. For example, there is a pronounced splitter at the front end as well as a bespoke hood with distinctive cooling vents. Among the most notable changes visible from the side include the extended skirts and the new black, center-locking wheels. The upgrades continue at the rear with a towering wing and a dramatic diffuser.

It’s very fitting that Dick will take the car for its first laps this afternoon. He’s a legend of the sport, and an incredible ambassador for Ford.”
