After a lengthy delay, Tesla launched their Semi late last year. However, it hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing as one of them apparently broke down shortly after launch and the model has already been recalled for a parking brake issue, which could result in vehicles rolling away.
The latest issue is less severe, but the Semi is being recalled once again as the vehicle fails to comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for Door Locks and Door Retention Components.
As the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explained, the Semi’s door closure warning system will display a notification on the vehicle’s touchscreen if a door is not fully latched. That’s not unusual, but the problem is that the notification can be dismissed.

As the government noted, “Although the door closure warning system activates as required when the parking brake is not engaged, thereby warning the operator of potentially driving with an open side door, a dismissible notification for an open side door may not adequately continue to keep the operator informed of an open side door, which may increase the risk of injury.”
Tesla discovered the issue during a “routine internal software-compliance audit” and started developing a software update almost immediately. It started rolling out four days later as an over-the-air update. Once the new software is installed, it will display a “non-dismissible dedicated telltale in all power states when a side door is open, regardless of parking brake state.”
36 vehicles from the 2023 model year were impacted and Tesla is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the issue.
