The Polaris Slingshot ranks among the most bizarre vehicles you can buy in America. Stripped down, fixated on the driver, mechanically simple, it sends every bit of its power to a single rear wheel and hands you a driving experience nothing else on the road can match. None of that saved one particular example from flopping at auction, and the reason isn’t hard to work out.
A stock Slingshot already looks rather wacky, but it does have some aggressive appeal. For whatever reason, the dealer behind this Slingshot R apparently decided that wasn’t enough and bolted on a body kit modeled after the Lamborghini Aventador, chasing a look the factory never intended.

The front end includes a bumper, hood, and headlights cribbed from the Aventador, and is also clad in a radioactive green loud enough to register from across a parking lot. It’s also been equipped with new 20-inch front wheels and a 22-inch rear wheel. Most of the rear bodywork is standard, although the three-wheeler has sprouted a large wing affixed to the rollover hoops.

Scroll through Cars & Bids and most comparable Slingshot R models change hands for somewhere between $15,000 and $25,000, the majority of them showing low miles. Bidding on this one ultimately topped out at just $13,786. In hindsight, the seller perhaps wishes the car had a slightly more realistic reserve, as that highest bid is probably about what this thing is worth.

Admittedly, it’s not just the exterior of this Slingshot R that looks bizarre. The interior has also been tweaked and reupholstered in a combination of black and two shades of lime green. It’s as if someone had sprayed radioactive material across the three-wheeler, so it’s perhaps no surprise that no one wanted to be spotted behind the wheel.
